Lef
Karin Bloemen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
The song "Lef" by Karin Bloemen tells the stories of two individuals who make bold decisions to break free from societal expectations and pursue their own dreams and happiness.
In the first verse, the lyrics describe a young and intelligent man who excels in business and social settings. However, he becomes increasingly dissatisfied with the superficiality and pressure of his surroundings. One day, he decides to quit his job and buys a sailboat to embark on a journey around the world. This symbolizes the idea of leaving behind the mundane and seeking adventure and personal fulfillment. The lyrics emphasize the importance of having the courage ("lef") to shake up one's existence and abandon the nonsensical and frenetic pace of life.
The second verse introduces a young woman who faced pressure from her parents to pursue a certain career path. Despite becoming a successful doctor, she realizes her true passion lies in music. She writes her own song, which may not become a massive hit, but it brings her an immense sense of personal achievement and happiness. This verse suggests that sometimes the biggest successes in life come from following one's heart and pursuing unconventional paths, rather than adhering to societal expectations.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the power of choice. Each day, we have the opportunity to either continue on a predetermined path or make drastic changes to our lives. The lyrics urge the listeners to have the courage to disrupt their existence and leave behind the unnecessary noise and frantic pursuit of superficial goals. By doing so, we can grasp a more fulfilling and authentic way of living, symbolized by reaching for the sky and making it our own.
In the final verse, the lyrics address the lingering voices of doubt and fear from the past, telling us to never give up and reminding us that we are capable of achieving greatness if we put in the effort. Even if we find ourselves overwhelmed and unsure of which direction to take, the lyrics encourage us to find strength in ourselves and seek support from those around us. The phrase "Een keer opzij" (look to the side) serves as a reminder to not always focus on our own ambitions and desires, but to also appreciate the people and opportunities that surround us.
In summary, "Lef" is a song that encourages listeners to have the courage to break free from societal expectations, pursue their dreams, and create a more fulfilling and authentic life. It emphasizes the power of choice and the importance of listening to one's inner voice, even when faced with doubt and fear. The lyrics encourage us to let go of the unnecessary noise and pressures in life, and to instead reach for the sky and make it our own.
