Davis has been involved with music from an early age, having picked up the violin when she was only five, which became her musical outlet until a move to the Pacific Northwest exposed her to the jazz scene, after which the upright bass and vocals became her rhythmic and melodic muse.
A vibrant and supportive music community in Portland, Oregon helped Davis throughout her musical career, urging her to perform and improve her talents. During high school, she garnered national recognition, receiving a YoungARTS silver award from NFAA (National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts), received four Downbeat Magazine Student Awards, was twice invited to the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony, and was a bassist in the Grammy Jazz Ensemble. As well, she was selected as a Presidential Scholar of the Arts, which her saw her visit the White House, and perform at The Kennedy Center. (that performance can be seen here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpxI3GMi298)
Davis started composing, writing, and arranging, and began performing her original works, as well as arranging the tracks on her records. An arrange of Rachmaninovs Symphonic Dances got her another from Downbeat Magazine.
Davis was recognized by MTV as one of the "Fifteen Fresh Females to Rule Pop" in 2014.
Her albums include Introducing Kate Davis (2008), A Kate Davis Holiday (2009), Live at Jimmy Mak's (2010), Trophy (2019)

Kate Davis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I just wanted to be in love
My very own whale song
My one true hum
I call for you
Across the hill and valley too
I put out a dream
Lay on my back
Feel your face in the cloud
Time is fickle in the space it allows
It could be 24 hours till I see you
Eighteen
Wading through the sea of love
Has become a chore
A bore without you
The alphabet
Has everything you mean to me
When you align four letters
Perfectly
Lay on my back
Feel your face in the cloud
Time is fickle in the space it allows
It could be 24 hours till I see you
What if I miss you at a highlight
Or at a stoplight
I'll know, I'll know
How low, I'll know
Will I miss you at the first light
Or at first sight
I'll know, I'll know
I'll know
Lay on my back
Feel your face in the cloud
Time is fickle in the space it allows
It could be 24 hours till I see you
Lay on my back
Feel your face in the cloud
Time is fickle in the space it allows
It could be 24 hours till I see you
See you
See you
In Kate Davis's song "Cloud," the lyrics reflect feelings of longing, yearning, and uncertainty in a relationship. The opening verse, "Seventeen, I just wanted to be in love, My very own whale song, My one true hum," conveys the singer's desire for love and connection, comparing it to a unique and heartfelt expression like a whale song. The metaphor of "whale song" suggests something deep and profound within the singer's longing for love.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the distance and separation between the singer and the object of their affection. Lines like "I call for you, Across the hill and valley too, I put out a dream, I hope it reaches you," evoke a sense of reaching out across vast distances, both physical and emotional, in the hopes of connecting with the one they love. The dream-like quality of the imagery enhances the idea of a somewhat ethereal and intangible connection.
As the song progresses to the verse "Eighteen, Wading through the sea of love, Has become a chore, A bore without you," there is a shift in the tone towards frustration and weariness in navigating the complexities of love without the presence of the other person. The singer finds the experience of love without their beloved to be tedious and unfulfilling, emphasizing the importance of this person in their life.
The repeated lines in the song's chorus, "Lay on my back, Feel your face in the cloud, Time is fickle in the space it allows, It could be 24 hours till I see you," reinforce the theme of distance and waiting, highlighting the uncertainty and impatience that come with longing for someone who is not physically near. The imagery of feeling the other person's presence in the clouds adds a dreamy and romantic quality to the song, while the mention of time passing underscores the anticipation and longing for a reunion. Overall, "Cloud" by Kate Davis captures the universal emotions of love, separation, and longing with poetic lyricism and evocative imagery.

Oh, to be a teenager again! This is so sweet and bouncy, but not frothy or bubblegummy. Great work, Kate. Worth the wait, again.
