Nalle assisted Troccoli in her career, helping the young artist record demos which would be given to Michael Blanton and Dan Harrell (Amy Grant's brother-in-law), who formed the Reunion label to start her career in 1982 with Stubborn Love, A second album, Heart and Soul, was released in 1984 and gave her first Grammy nomination a year later, followed by Images in 1986. Troccoli also provided backing vocal for Taylor Dayne's song "I'll Be Your Shelter" in 1989/1990.
Miss Troccoli moved at age three and was raised in the East Islip community in Long Island, and graduated from East Islip High School, where as a senior, fellow classmates included fellow CCM artist Margaret Becker (a junior) and three-sport star Norman Esiason, Jr, a freshman. At 15, she lost her father to colon cancer. She also lost her mother to breast cancer in 1991, shortly before her album, Pure Attraction, hit the shelves with her number one mainstream hit, "Everything Changes". Before this album came out, she had taken a five year break from the music world to do some "soul searching" and deal with her bulimia.
After her mother's death, she paired with Reunion again in 1991 with Pure Attraction, which launched her on the national charts was "Everything Changes." But ironically, it was "Help Myself To You" which became her first #1 hit in her ten-year career, and began a string of GMA Music Awards nominations, including numerous attempts at Female Vocalist.
Numerous hit songs came afterwards, including 1994's "My Life Is in Your Hands", a song written with Bill Montvilo which defined her career, and inspired the eponymous devotional book, written in 1997, and 1995's "Go Light Your World," which gave us the rise of writer Chris Rice, and was used for charity efforts that year.
In 1996, Troccoli was featured on the Beach Boys' now out-of-print album "Stars and Stripes Vol. 1" singing lead vocals on a cover of their 1969 song "I Can Hear Music" (itself a cover of a Phil Spector song). The Beach Boys sing on the track as well, providing harmonies and backing vocals.
Break My Heart

Days of fun
Had many hours in the sun
Been to many mountains
Walked along the ocean shores
I've seen rainbows fill the sky
Counted stars on summer nights
Oh, so many moments
[Chorus]
But, it's been the rain
I'ts been the storms
It's been the days
When I've been worn
That I have found You, Lord
That I have found You, Father
It's in the pain
That I have grown
Through all the sorrow
I have known
But, if that's what it takes
For You to lead me this far
Go ahead and break my heart
I have felt the winter snow
Seen the beauty of a rose
Sat by many fires
And enjoyed the warmth of friends
I've known love
And it's embrace
Have felt the wind
Against my face
Watched the moon at midnight
Shine upon a sleeping world
[Chorus]
In "Break My Heart," Kathy Troccoli reflects on the highs and lows of her life. She begins by acknowledging the many joyful moments she has experienced- laughter, fun, sunshine, and breathtaking landscapes. But, she also knows what it's like to face difficult times, including storms, pain, and weariness. It is in these moments of suffering that she has found solace and connection with God. Though it may seem counterintuitive, Troccoli suggests that she's grateful for all the heartbreak she has faced because it has led her closer to her faith.
Troccoli continues to reflect on the other beautiful moments and experiences she has had- snowfall, roses, warmth, friends, and love. But, she returns to the idea that it's the pain that has been the most transformative for her. She recognizes that through sorrow and brokenness, she has learned and grown, ultimately leading her to where she is today. Even if it means experiencing more heartbreak in the future, she trusts that it's what she needs to continue to evolve and deepen her faith.
The lyrics of "Break My Heart" encourage listeners to find the beauty in the struggle, to embrace the storms of life, and to trust that everything that happens is part of a larger plan. While acknowledging that it's never easy to face challenges, Troccoli offers reassurance that these experiences can make us stronger, wiser, and ultimately more connected to God.
