After singing in church during her childhood, she pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager. Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her debut studio album Katy Hudson under her birth name in 2001, which was commercially unsuccessful. She moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music after Red Hill ceased operations and she subsequently began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. After adopting the stage name 'Katy Perry' and being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records, she signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007.
Perry rose to fame in 2008 with her second album, One of the Boys, a pop rock record containing the controversial U.S number one song "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot n Cold". Three subsequent albums have topped the U.S. Billboard 200. The disco-influenced Teenage Dream (2010) spawned five chart-topping U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles–"California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T.", and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" — a record tying her with Michael Jackson's "Bad". Its follow-up record Prism (2013) was inspired by her divorce, and incorporates pop and dance along with themes of self-reflection, everyday life, and relationships. With the music videos for its chart-topping songs "Roar" and "Dark Horse", Perry became the first artist to have multiple videos reach one billion views on Vevo. Her 2017 electropop album, 'Witness' featured a political subtext and a theme of liberation. Her sixth studio album 'Smile' followed in 2020.
Perry has nine U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number one singles and has received various awards, including four Guinness World Records, five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, a Brit Award, and a Juno Award. She has been included in the annual Forbes lists of highest-earning women in music from 2011 to 2019. Her estimated net worth as of 2016 is $125 million. Perry is one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 18 million albums and 125 million singles worldwide. In film, she released an autobiographical documentary titled "Katy Perry: Part of Me" in 2012, and voiced Smurfette in the 2011 film The Smurfs and its sequel in 2013. Her Super Bowl halftime show performance is the most watched in history. Perry also began serving as a judge on American Idol in 2018.

With no lifeline
And no messages can reach me from the outside
When I looked out over the horizon
Didn't notice the sun was setting or just rising
Then it hit me
Maybe bit me
I didn't know exactly where I would be going
But I had to let this river in me flowing
What a ride
When you open your eyes
For the very first time
A real surprise
I started living outside of the box
Crossing over lines where I always used to stop
Living outside of the box
'Cause I'm not gonna be anybody that I'm not
I always knew this day would come
When I got off my back, found some motivation
I've been living on the other side
Come hell or high water every moment I'm alive
I was living on a fault line
The fault was all mine
And this unstable ground found me down half the time
But I had enough
I had to get up
I had to shrug it all off 'cause it's the same old stuff
Then it hit me
You won't permit me
To be an individual
Just doesn't fit me
But I decided that it's going to be living
Yeah, I decided I'm escaping from your prison
What a high
When you open your mind for the very first time
A real surprise
I started living outside of the box
Crossing over lines where I always used to stop
Living outside of the box
'Cause I'm not gonna be anybody that I'm not
I always knew this day would come
When I got off my back, found some motivation
I've been living on the other side
Come hell or high water every moment I'm alive
So long conformity
And ambiguality is a new priority
All it takes, for heaven sakes
Is to figure out the face and learn to seperate
I started living outside for the box
Taking my time when I always used to rush
Living outside of the box
'Cause I'm not gonna be anybody that I'm not
I always knew this day would come
When I broke down the walls for my liberation
I've been living on the other side
Come hell or high water every moment I'm alive
Oh, living outside of the box
Oh, living outside of the box
Oh, living outside
Ha ha ha
I always knew this day would come
When I got off my back, found some motivation
Oh, living outside of the box
Of the box, of your life
Of everything that seems that nice
The lyrics of "The Box" explore the theme of breaking free from societal expectations and living life to the fullest. Katy Perry explains how she used to live in a "small mind" with no real purpose, but then realized that she had to let herself be free and live outside of the box. She sings about how she started to cross over lines where she always used to stop and take her time when she always used to rush. Perry talks about getting off her back and finding motivation to truly live life, no matter what anyone else thinks.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the idea of living outside of the box, meaning that Perry is not going to pretend to be someone she's not or live up to other people's expectations. She sings about breaking down the walls of her own limitations and living on the other side, no matter what obstacles come her way.
Overall, "The Box" is an empowering anthem that encourages listeners to let go of their fears and societal expectations and live life authentically.

With no lifeline
I had no support system to help me

Didn't notice the sun was setting or just rising
I was unaware of the passing of time and the opportunities available to me
Then it hit me
I suddenly realized something important
Maybe bit me
Perhaps I was inspired or motivated by something
Then I knew, quite a few would not go with me
I realized not everyone would support or understand my decision
I didn't know exactly where I would be going
I was uncertain of my destination
But I had to let this river in me flowing
I had to allow my inner voice and passion guide me towards my goals
What a ride
It was a thrilling and exciting experience
When you open your eyes
When you begin to see things in a new way
For the very first time
For the first time ever
A real surprise
It was unexpected and eye-opening
I started living outside of the box
I began to live life unconventionally
Crossing over lines where I always used to stop
I surpassed my self-imposed limitations
'Cause I'm not gonna be anybody that I'm not
I refused to pretend to be someone else in order to fit in
I always knew this day would come
I anticipated this pivotal moment
When I got off my back, found some motivation
When I stopped being lazy and found inspiration
I've been living on the other side
I've been exploring a new way of living
Come hell or high water every moment I'm alive
No matter what obstacles come my way, I will continue to live this way
I was living on a fault line
My way of living was unstable and could fall apart at any moment
The fault was all mine
I was responsible for my own problems
And this unstable ground found me down half the time
Living unconventionally was difficult and brought its share of failures
But I had enough
I was tired of living a limited life
I had to get up
I had to take action to change my situation
I had to shrug it all off 'cause it's the same old stuff
I had to let go of my old way of life, which was dull and unfulfilling
You won't permit me
You won't allow me
To be an individual
To be myself and express my unique qualities
Just doesn't fit me
It doesn't feel natural or authentic to me
But I decided that it's going to be living
But I chose to live life on my own terms
Yeah, I decided I'm escaping from your prison
I decided to break free from the societal pressures to conform
So long conformity
Goodbye to the pressure to fit in
And ambiguality is a new priority
I choose to embrace ambiguity and the unknown
All it takes, for heaven sakes
It's easier than you think
Is to figure out the face and learn to separate
To figure out what's important and what's not
Taking my time when I always used to rush
I now take a more deliberate approach to life
When I broke down the walls for my liberation
When I removed the mental barriers holding me back
Of everything that seems that nice
Of the superficial things in life that seem appealing but have no real value
Of the box, of your life
Of the conventional and limiting way of living
Oh, living outside
Oh, what an exhilarating feeling to live unconventionally

E nenhuma mensagem podia me alcançar do lado de fora
Então eu me toquei, talvez me mordi
Atravessando limites, onde eu costumava parar
Quando me virei, achei alguma motivação
Eu estava vivendo do outro lado
E este terreno instável encontrou-me no chão a metade do tempo
Então me toquei, você não vai me permitir
Atravessando limites, onde eu costumava parar
Quando me virei, achei a motivação
Eu estava vivendo do outro lado
Contanto conformidade
E a igualdade
E aprender a separar
Eu estava vivendo do outro lado
Oh, vivendo fora
Eu sempre soube que esse dia viria
Quando me virei, achei a motivação
Oh, vivendo fora
Da caixa
Da caixa
Da sua vida
De tudo que parecer tão legal
Da caixa
Vivendo fora da caixa

These lyrics are so GOOD!! And this song is so catchy too! Ever since I saw the movie I knew this song would be awesome! I think it's my favorite Katy Perry song! Of course all her other songs are spectacular too!
@gregh8989
I don't know why Katy ever departed this Morissette-like sound, it's the best era of her music by a long shot.
@qmekanix
heh, long shot. I see what you did there.
@kaylactic
I'm the only one who thinks that this genre fits her better?
