Thin Air
Keane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't keep up, you're
Moving too fast,
Deep holes and darkness,
These things will pass.

Dark times and strange places where

When I came to see you
You had nothing to say,
I stood right beside you,
You turned the other way,
I reached out to hold you
And found nobody there,
You turn into air.

Trust me, I want you
Just as you are,
Don't change the things you do,
Just stay as you are.

Dark times and strange places where

When I came to see you
You had nothing to say,
I stood right beside you,
You turned the other way,
I reached out to hold you
And found nobody there,
You turn into air.

Dark times and strange places where

When I came to see you
You had nothing to say,
I stood right beside you,
You turned the other way,
I reached out to hold you

And found nobody there,
You turn into air.

Overall Meaning

The Keane song "Thin Air" speaks of a failed relationship, one in which the singer is having trouble keeping up with the intense, fast-paced nature of their partner. The metaphor of "deep holes and darkness" alludes to the emotional and mental strain that the relationship is causing. Despite the difficulties, the singer seems to want to hold on, urging their partner to stay as they are and not change anything. However, as the relationship deteriorates, the partner becomes distant, turning away from the singer and eventually disappearing into thin air.
