O God Our Lord
Keith Green Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who you gonna throw in the lake of fire,
O God our Lord?
Who you gonna throw when the flames get higher,
O God our Lord?
The Devil and the man with the dark desire,
O God our Lord.
The Devil and the man with the dark desire,
O God our Lord.

O God our Lord, O God our Lord.
Who you gonna throw in the lake of fire,
O God our Lord, O God our Lord.

Will my name be there when the books are opened,
O God our Lord.
Will my name be there when the books are opened,
O God our Lord.
You better know now, don't just be hoping,
O God our Lord.
You better know now, don't just be hoping,
O God our Lord.

O God our Lord, O God our Lord.
Well my name be there when the books are opened,
O God our Lord, O God our Lord.

Who's outside of the Holy City,
O God our Lord.
Tell me, who's left out of the Holy City,
O God our Lord.
The liar and the thief and the ones half ready,
O God our Lord.
The liar and the thief and the ones half ready,
O God our Lord.

O God our Lord, O God our Lord.
Tell me who's left out of the Holy City,
O God our Lord, O God our Lord.

My, My, My Lord.
I'm crying out to you master, oh Lord,
Don't you know I need you, oh Lord.

Have mercy on a poor sinner like me, Oh Jesus.
Don't you know I need you, Oh Lord.

Overall Meaning

The song โ€œO God Our Lordโ€ by Keith Green appears to be a conversation between the artist and God about the end of times. The song starts with a question to God asking who is going to be thrown in the lake of fire when the flames get higher. The artist then answers the question himself by saying that it will be the devil and the man with the dark desire. He then repeats the refrain asking once again, who God will throw in the lake of fire.

The song then shifts to ask a more personal question to God, whether or not the artistโ€™s name will be in the book when it is opened. The artist is hoping that he has lived his life in accordance with Godโ€™s will so that he will be included when the book is opened. In the end, the song lists people who will be left out of the Holy City, which makes the artist question if he will be left out too. Finally, the artist cries out to God asking for mercy, acknowledging himself as a poor sinner.

Overall, the song is a conversation between the artist and God about the end of times and who is going to be saved. The artist hopes that he has lived his life according to Godโ€™s plan so that he can be saved when the time comes.

I saw Keith Green twice in concert. Many years ago when I heard Keith had died in a plane crash I cried like I'd lost my best friend. Though I didn't know him personally, I did through his music. He simply was "the best of the best". To Jesus Christ be all honor and glory!!!

Heard him do it live in Greenville, S.C. in 1982 (March), and he died a few months later! He was awesome! I will never forget his talent, his words, nor his God! His God is my God!

The song always brings the reality of how important it is to be right with God to me
Not only that but the importance of being ready for him.
As anyone of us could die at any moment.
And also he could come back at anytime too.

I too was blessed to see Keith Green in Grants Pass, OR in 1981, and was greatly impacted by his music and message as a new believer. His songs are just as powerful now as they were then. He was sent from God, and I thank God for him.

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. John 3:5 - Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
