Happy
Keith Richards/Mick Jagger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I never kept a dollar past sunset,
It always burned a hole in my pants.
Never made a school mama happy,
Never blew a second chance.

I need a love to keep me happy,
I need a love to keep me happy.
Baby, baby keep me happy.
Baby, baby keep me happy.

Always took candy from strangers,
Didn't wanna get me no trade.
Never want to be like papa,
Working for the boss ev'ry night and day.

I need a love to keep me happy,
I need a love, baby won't ya keep me happy.
Baby, won't ya keep me happy.
Baby, please keep me

I need a love to keep me happy,
I need a love to keep me happy.
Baby, baby keep me happy.
Baby, baby keep me happy.

Never got a flash out of cocktails,
When I got some flesh off the bone.
Never got a lift out of Lear jets,
When I can fly way back home.

I need a love to keep me happy,
I need a love to keep me happy.

Baby, baby keep me happy.
Baby, baby keep me happy.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Keith Richards's song "Happy" paint a picture of a man who's lived life on his own terms, eschewing societal conventions and seeking only pleasure and satisfaction for himself. He's never been able to hold on to money, always spending it as soon as he gets it, and he's never been one to please authority figures like school teachers or bosses. He's also never wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and work a tedious, uninspiring job for someone else's benefit. Instead, he needs a love to keep him happy, someone who he can turn to for companionship and emotional fulfillment.

The theme of rebellion against societal conventions is highlighted in the lyrics, as the singer takes candy from strangers and doesn't want to "get [himself] no trade," implying that he doesn't want to be tied down to a traditional, structured career path. He also speaks dismissively of flashy things like cocktails and fancy jets, suggesting that he derives happiness not from material possessions, but from a deep, fulfilling relationship with another person.

I was at this show in St. Louis last night. I have been a loyal fan for 50 years. I have seen the Rolling Stones 4 times now, and I can honestly say that last night's show was amazing. The professionalism and quality music that these guys put out just proves that they are still the GREATEST rock & roll band in the world. 🌎

@Mark Cianfarani Yes, yes, I know he's only 14 - but that's what he said. He's also an old soul. :)

You are correct But

@chuckfan1 did they sing under my thumb. That can’t be considered ok to sing today.

@You are correct But Yeah, i get that, but if thats the case, it shoulda been pulled 4-5 years ago, when all that cancel culture stuff got started. So It was ok the last 30 years, and ok up until a year or so ago (when the last tour was), but not now? No biggie, just a little surprised
