Apparently on a table top toy kit, though it sounds like there are real toms overdubbed also. It has such a unique sound, which makes this most political of Stones songs hit harder. Keith is a fricking genius on that guitar, even though it's so simple.

If you like that kind of experimental stuff I'd recommend 'Swans' with the album 'The Seer'. Of course stones were among the first to experiment with that kind of sound but they inspired a whole genre by doing so. And Swans are among the most unusual yet 'classic' (acoustic instruments, not so much synths) bands in that particular direction of experimental/psychedelic rock.

When I was young there was a jerk DJ on the oldies station that would cut off that part of the song as if it weren’t essential to play. Then he’d yap blah yap blah yap about some crap. That part of the song is a combo of excitement and tranquility, which is a difficult combo to acquire.

I lived in London in the late 60s as a 20 year old, anyway I went to France for a short visit and got stuck in a City where there were riots in the streets, Molotov Cocktails being thrown, and people would have their windows opened wide and the Stones would be playing this very song... LOUDLY across the whole City...
I guess that was in 1968 as I turned 21 in 1969, in London...

@no1nestandsalone : The music stands the test of time, movies still can be seen of those crazy days, but please dont romanticize it too much as we had no idea what we were doing as we had no real frame of reference as we were the new Baby Boom generation after the Second World War, I was born 1948, and when I lived in Glasgow Scotland I thought I was the only person in the World that thought as I thought until I arrived in London, aged 18, and realized there were fucking thousands, millions, of us all thinking that way and somehow this comic universe trip all came together without a leader but things were not all groovy as you can see while we look back in hindsight.
My 21st Birthday cake, August 8th 1969, had the icing loaded with 21 hits of Strawberry Fields LSD and everybody knew but little old birthday boy, me..
We did stuff like that back then it was all in the groove.
London was a great City then, now not so much. In the late 60s it was London, Amsterdam, New York City and San Francisco, I lived in London late 1960s, NYC early 1980s and SF mid 1980s, hung out a LOT in Amsterdam in 1970.
Dig your life today, because trust me, it goes by real fast....Im now 70.

An absolute gem that's even more relevant today. Fun fact: the guitar playing in the right channel was recorded on a cassette recorder in (most likely) a writing session. Someone wisely chose to transfer it on to one of the master tracks. It's perfect.

Brian was the heart and soul of the Stones for me. Of course I was just an 11 year old kid when Paint it Black came out. But I truly loved that song and Street Fighting Man. They're two of my favorite Stones tunes. I think the Stones did "dark" music better than the Beatles. Maybe it was just more their thing or something. But I'm really drifting now. Anyway, when Brian died, a lot of my interest in the Stones died with him :(

Man I'm 60 which brings me into a lucky category in that I was old enough at 14 to see the Stones live in '72 at Sydney's Randwick racecourse! They arrived in a white stagecoach drawn by 6 white horses & shot psychedelic ping-pong balls & balloons over everyone! AMAZING CONCERT 1<3

Charlie was incredible on this track and even better on Gimme Shelter. The passing of Mr Watts was one of the darkest days for Rock n Roll.

According to legend, Richards and Watts laid down the basic track for this song at home on cassette, with Watts playing a toy drum kit. They later couldn’t recapture the vibe of the original recording, so they stuck with it, adding overdubs to beef up the sound — proving that a true artist can create greatness with the simplest tools.

Agreed. I don't listen to much music outside of classical and video game stuff, but I liked this song a lot after hearing it in Fantastic Mr. Fox (great movie btw). After listening to this song and Paint it Black, I'm 90% sure that they have a sitar. That's pretty unique considering the sitar is not what you'd think of when you think Rock and Roll... Maybe the inclusion is due to Ravi Shankar's influence on music, which I'm pretty sure paved the way for the psychedelic genre. I think he also taught the Beatles how to play sitar. Idk I'm not a music historian, so I could be wrong

In assoluto tra le più belle canzoni in circolazione. Tra le 10 migliori degli stones. Da un bel pò di tempo non posso fare a meno di ascoltarla 2/3 volte prima di andare a dormire. Eccellente anche la versione live. E' inutile dirte che gli Stones sono la più grande rock band di tutti i tempi, ma lo dico lo stesso, nel caso qualcuno avesse dei dubbi.

Keith told Rolling Stone in 1971: “The basic track [for 'Street Fighting Man'] of that was done on a mono cassette with very distorted recording, on a Philips with no limiters. Brian is playing sitar, it twangs away. He’s holding notes that wouldn’t come through if you had a board, you wouldn’t be able to fit it in. But on a cassette if you just move the people, it does. Cut in the studio and then put on a tape. Started putting percussion and bass on it. That was really an electronic track, up in the realms.”

'What can a poor boy do but sing in a rock and roll band?' is one of the greatest rock and roll lines of all time.

It only reached #48 in Billboard, due to many radio stations' refusal to play the song based on what were perceived as subversive lyrics. Because of the 1968 National Democratic Convention and the possibility of the song inciting further violence, Chicago radio stations refused to play the song.

@Dave Bartholome It's a really interesting one, this period in music. Shows you how studied song lyrics were back then. The Beatles (specifically Lennon) got a huge amount of stick for Revolution, "But when you talk about destruction / Don't you know that you can count me out" which appeared as "out... in" on the White Album. He couldn't decide which side of the fence he came down on. Aye, they might be the Stones Incorporated nowadays, but considering how much money Allen Klein swindled em out of, that sweetens the pill for me.
