Lighthouse
Kelly Clarkson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I need a do-over, how did we end up this way?
I'm so confused lover did I mistake love and pain
Ain't got no shine left I couldn't hide it
I almost lost all my light, and

I didn't choose sober but my eyes can't look away
I see our true colors lately, we've been lookin' grey
I can't turn back now
'Cause you'd take me back down
That road that always seems to come right back around

(Remember when) we had dreams to fly away
(But that was then) and now our story's just a page

Like a wave you're always crashing into me, crashing into me
And these days are harder than they used to be, and they used to be
No shooting stars can, fix what we aren't and
What good's a lighthouse when the light is burning out?

It's such a shame when your wants and needs they don't align
Which road to take cause your hand's no longer holdin' mine
I guess that's life and sometimes you fight and
Sometimes you walk away in order to survive

(Remember when) there was nowhere to throw blame
(But that was then) and now it's when you use my name

Like a chill in my bones when you say to me, what you say to me
I thought I found home, but hidden underneath we were crumbling
No shooting stars can fix what we are and
What good's a lighthouse when the light is burning out?

And I feel what we were washing over me, questioning everything, all that time (i feel)
And I keep all the ways that you wanted me to be different fresh in my mind (i keep)
What you loved, what you wanted, what you held so high when we first met in hindsight (ooh)
Were the things that you tried and asked me to change
As if I could do that (ooh)

Like a wave you're always crashing into me, crashing into me
And these days are harder than they used to be, and they used to be

No shooting stars can fix what we are and
What good's a lighthouse when the light is burning out?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kelly Clarkson's song "Lighthouse" explore a relationship that has lost its way and is now filled with confusion, pain, and a sense of feeling lost. The singer expresses a desire for a fresh start, a "do-over," as they question how they ended up in this troubled state. They admit to mistaking love for pain, indicating that the relationship has become toxic.

The metaphor of the lighthouse is used to symbolize hope and guidance, but in this case, the light is burning out. The singer feels that there is no longer any shine or light left within them, implying a loss of their inner strength and positivity. They are unable to turn back and escape the destructive cycle that keeps repeating itself.

The lyrics also touch upon the idea of changing oneself to fit someone else's expectations. The singer reflects on the ways they were asked to be different and the pressure they felt to conform to their partner's desires. However, they realize that trying to change themselves was futile, and it only led to their own unhappiness.

Overall, "Lighthouse" portrays a relationship that has lost its spark and direction. The metaphor of the lighthouse fading represents the loss of hope and the struggle to find guidance in the midst of a troubled connection.

It’s funny that other artist get more awards, more recognition, more popularity, more listeners and this girl is out here singing her heart out. But like she said one time, artist are not the ones that sing the loudest but the ones that can touch and move you!🔥🔥🔥Thats what Kelly does, touch and move you😭🥰🔥

@stevec6002

I mean....Kelly sure hasn't done badly for herself, though, lol. She has multiple Grammy's and plenty of other awards and lots of records sales, a coach on The Voice, her own talk show, etc.

@Cmonsense214

@@stevec6002 Oh yes, you are 100% right! And let’s not forget she was the first American Idol winner! But if you look at the music industry now days and how they promote music. Kelly and other artist like her don’t have the recognition that they should have, but let me tell you this, Kelly is one of the few artists that can sound exactly the same singing live and singing on a record and that for me that says more than just winning awards. Do you agree?

@raeanngodfrey6986

Kelly was never going to be put in a box. She and Record companies did very well with radio hits. But Kelly has always been about moving us. This song stuns

@marymanchon8520

Wish I could see her at a concert I can't afford it

@christinespiers-wy9kr

One of the most incredible singers of our time! If we still had “phone books”, Kelly could take any page out of it, and make it sound beautiful!❤

@nasskc896

I thought MINE just gutted me. Lighthouse is next level heart-wrenching. I can't stop crying... Kelly is singing & crying her heart out at the same time like she always does. If you didn't feel it then you need to check your pulse. Such a masterpiece album. I can't wait to hear it all & have all the feelings. I feel like Kelly doesn't get much recognition for her songwriting skill y'all.
