Dorham was one of the most active bebop trumpeters. He played in the big bands of Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton and Mercer Ellington and the quintet of Charlie Parker. He was a charter member of the original cooperative Jazz Messengers. He also recorded as a sideman with Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins, and he replaced Clifford Brown in the Max Roach Quintet after Brown's death in 1956. In addition to sideman work, he led his own groups, including the Jazz Prophets (formed shortly after Art Blakey took over the Jazz Messengers name). The Jazz Prophets can be heard on the 1956 Blue Note live album Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia.
Dorham's talent is frequently lauded by critics and other musicians, but he never received the kind of attention from the jazz establishment that many of his peers did. For this reason, his name has become (in the words of writer Gary Giddins) "virtually synonymous with 'underrated.'"
During his final years Dorham suffered from kidney disease, of which he died.
Since I Fell for You

And never get love
You'd better let love depart
I know it's so, and yet I know
I can't get you out of my heart
You made me leave my happy home
You took my love and now you're gone
Love brings such misery and pain
I guess I'll never be the same
Since I fell for you
Well, it's too bad
And it's too sad
But I'm in love with you
You love me, then you snub me
But what can I do?
I'm so in love with you
I guess I'll never see the light
I get the blues most every night
Since I fell for you
Since I fell for you
The lyrics of Kenny Dorham's song "Since I Fell for You" explore the complexities and struggles of being in love, particularly when it is unrequited or not reciprocated fully. The song expresses the pain and heartache that comes from giving love but not receiving it in return. The opening lines, "When you just give love and never get love, you'd better let love depart," suggests the singer's realization that it might be better to let go of this love that is causing them so much pain. However, despite knowing this, they admit that they cannot get the person they love out of their heart, showing the depth of their emotions and their inability to move on.
The lyrics also touch upon the loss and sacrifice that love can bring. The line, "You made me leave my happy home, you took my love and now you're gone," indicates that the singer's love for this person has caused them to abandon their previous happiness and security. This emphasizes the power and impact that this unrequited love has had on their life. The phrase, "Love brings such misery and pain, I guess I'll never be the same," further highlights the deep sorrow and lasting effects that falling in love has had on the singer.
The song conveys a sense of longing and desperation, as the singer admits that they are still in love with the person who snubs them. They express the helplessness and surrender that comes with being in love, even when it is not reciprocated fully. The line, "I'm so in love with you, I guess I'll never see the light," suggests that the singer feels trapped and unable to let go of this love, regardless of the pain it brings.
Overall, "Since I Fell for You" portrays the bittersweet nature of love, showcasing the highs and lows, the joy and sorrow, and the intensity and vulnerability that comes with falling in love.
