True Lies
Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where do you go after midnight
When all the doors should be closed
Your alibis just don't sound right
And I asked but nobody knows

Then you look me in the eye
And make it sound so very nice
With your true lies

Hey!
Someone's been sleepin' in my bed
'Cause this room don't smell like you and me
Someone's been sneakin' out the window
Do you think I'm too blind to see

When you look me in the eye
And make it sound so very nice
With your true lies

It was a clever disguise
But, girl, I'm getting wise
To your true lies

Well, you been doin' this so long now
thinkin' it's the truth
I guess it don't seem so wrong if it
Ain't bein' done to you

Gotta lot to learn, baby
You can't keep it down

When word gets in the wind
Then it's bound to blow back around

Overall Meaning

"True Lies" by Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band is a song about a woman who is cheating on her lover. The song starts with the singer questioning the whereabouts of his lover after midnight, as all the doors should be closed by then. Her alibis don't add up, and when he confronts her, she looks into his eyes and tells "very nice" "true lies." The singer accuses his lover of having someone else sleep in their bed, and suspects that she's been sneaking out the window. He knows that something is not right, and that she's been covering her tracks, but her convincing lies make him unsure of what she's hiding. The singer then realizes that his lover has been keeping her true intentions secret for a long time, thinking it's the truth. He now sees behind her ingenious disguise, and he's getting wise to her deceitful ways.

Such a great album....and the new recording sounds great! Part of me worried because - "why screw with perfection?" but it's very faithful and everything sounds great. We always still have the original, but man this sounds really good, there's absolutely nothing about it that makes me want to hit stop and put on the original! Can't wait to hear the rest and watch the documentary!
