Gus and Jamie grew up in the suburbs south of London and went to school together. In search for a new band member, they posted advertisements, including on MixB, an online bulletin board for Japanese expatriates, largely due to their interest in Japanese rap. They selected Sarah based on her background in art, and their interest in her bilingual ability. Although she had collaborated with a Japanese girl group previously, Sarah did not have a background in professional singing; instead, she was interested in collaborating with Gus and Jamie simply because she "wanted to try it".
The band released their debut mixtape Intro Bonito through Double Denim Records in August 2014. They wrote many of their songs featured on the mixtape using a Casio SA-45 mini-keyboard. The band also contributed "Flamingo" to Ryan Hemsworth's compilation EP shh#ffb6c1. In September 2014, Kero Kero Bonito released Bonito Recycling, a compilation of Intro Bonito remixes by artists including Danny L Harle and Spazzkid.
On October 21, 2016, their official debut album Bonito Generation was released through Double Denim Records. The album featured previous singles such as "Picture This" released in March 2015, "Lipslap" released in February 2016 and "Break" released in June 2016.
On February 12, 2018, the band released their single Only Acting which featured a more darker, rock-influenced style compared to their previous releases. On February 20, 2018, the band released their EP, TOTEP. The EP included the aforementioned single Only Acting, and other songs following the rock-influenced style. On May 8, 2018, the band released the single Time Today, and announced their second studio album, Time 'n' Place, which was released on October 1, 2018 The album was inspired by radical changes in the band's personal lives and featured a similar sound to TOTEP.
On July 8, 2019, the band uploaded "KKB Life" to their YouTube channel, a vlog video recorded during the Time 'n' Place era, announcing that a new era is starting. They later released the single When the Fires Come in September 2019 and their EP Civilisation I later that month. The EP and lead single featured an electronic style, similar to the band's production in their earlier work. In 2020, the band wrote and performed It's Bugsnax!, the theme song for the video game Bugsnax, which was featured in its announcement trailer. The members of the band recorded their parts of the song remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On April 21, 2021, Kero Kero Bonito published their EP Civilisation II, a sequel to their previous EP Civilisation I, after releasing the single The Princess and the Clock earlier on February 24, 2021. This EP continued the electronic style the band established in the first EP. On September 10, 2021, the band published a compilation, Civilisation, combining EPs Civilisation I and Civilisation II, with the added track Gateway in between them.

High up in a chamber
She painted pictures of the man that made her
Oh, ooh, oh
Shadowed by a clock face
The hands were rusted at the time she came in
When she played outside
But she made a wish
To grow, one day, her own pair of wings
She sailed long from the fall
To find herself in the world
When in the wind, she heard a burning call
And so she followed it and came ashore
On a beach with a crowd, waiting here for you
Then a voice said, "It was true
We all prayed for a princess
You're the one, heaven sent"
Oh, ooh, oh
High up in the chamber
She painted pictures of the man that made her
Oh, ooh, oh
Just to remember
Before the memory got lost in the dark
Oh, ooh, oh
Shadowed by a clock face
The hands were rusted at the time she came in
Though she shrugged the passing of the days
Eternally a child she would remain
But while she flies like the wind
The air escaped into silence
She woke up laying on a gilded bed
With half a dozen maids around her
"We're keeping you safe in a tall place
Where you can see all imagining for miles
By God's decree
Hail to the girl, our Queen"
As the nights ran
Together blurring into years
Her brush strokes never disappeared
Oh, ooh, oh
High up in the chamber
She painted pictures of the man that made her
Oh, ooh, oh
Just to remember
Before the memory got lost in the dark
Oh, ooh, oh
Shadowed by a clock face
The hands were rusted at the time she came in
Though she shrugged the passing of the days
Eternally a child she would remain
Until one day when the clatter rang through the hills
They found my garland that smashed open window sill
A feather high in the air
And the once stopped clock was ticking on
The lyrics of Kero Kero Bonito's "The Princess and the Clock" appear to describe a fairy tale-like story about a young girl who aspires to fly with wings. The first verse paints a picture of the girl's semi-isolated life within a chamber, where she creates paintings of a man who seemingly had a significant impact on her life. The second verse tells of her journey outside of the chamber, a journey that takes her across the sea to a foreign land, where she receives an unusual welcome.
The setting is grand and majestic as she is crowned 'Queen' by a group of people, and a life of opulence is bestowed upon her. As time goes by, she continues to paint, expressing her thoughts and feelings, ultimately remaining eternally childlike. Still, despite her seemingly endless days of grandeur, she longs to fly with her own pair of wings. Eventually, her dream comes true, and her feathered garland ends up breaking her window and soaring her into the sky to happiness and freedom.
The song's lyrics are poetic and visually descriptive of the character's life journey. It tells a uniquely emotional story of a girl who is stuck somewhere longing for a life of freedom while being praised and held captive in grandeur simultaneously.

[Chorus]
Oh, ooh, oh
High up in a chamber
She painted pictures of the land that made her
Oh, ooh, oh
Shadowed by a clock face
The hands arrested at the time she came and
When she peered outside
She saw the birds, so high
That she made a wish
To grow, one day, her own pair of wings
[Verse 1]
She sailed long from afar
To find herself in the world
When in the wind, she heard an island call
And so she followed it and came ashore
On a beach with a crowd
"We waited here for you"
Then a voice said it was true
"We all prayed for a princess
You're the one heaven sent"
[Chorus]
Oh, ooh, oh
High up in a chamber
She painted pictures of the land that made her
Oh, ooh, oh
Just to remember
For the memory got lost in the dark
Oh, ooh, oh
Shadowed by a clock face
The hands arrested at the time she came and
Though she showed the passing of the days
Eternally a child she would remain
[Verse 2]
Before she felt any fear
The air escaped into silence
She woke up lying on a gilded bed
With half a dozen maids around her
"We're keeping you safe in a tall place
Where you can see all the land you lead for us
By God's decree
Hail to the girl, our Queen"
[Bridge]
As the nights ran
Together blurring into years
Her brushstrokes never disappeared
[Chorus]
Oh, ooh, oh
High up in a chamber
She painted pictures of the land that made her
Oh, ooh, oh
Just to remember
For the memory got lost in the dark
Oh, ooh, oh
Shadowed by a clock face
The hands arrested at the time she came and
Though she showed the passing of the days
Eternally a child she would remain
[Outro]
Until one day when a clatter rang through the hills
They found her gone and a smashed-open windowsill
A feather hung in the air
And the once-stopped clock was ticking on
