Fowler put together a country band in 1998 and began playing Tuesday nights at Babe's on Sixth Street in Austin. Within two years, he'd begun recording albums and struck big with his self-released Beer, Bait and Ammo (2000). The album sold around 30,000 copies in the Texas area and garnered an impressive amount of airplay, particularly for the album's title track. The song became somewhat of a Texas anthem; Mark Chesnutt made the song part of his live show, and Sammy Kershaw recorded it. Fowler returned in 2002 with his third album, High on the Hog, and boasted some impressive guests, including Willie Nelson and David Lee Garza.

In a low-cut dress with a bottle of wine
She said this will be a night you won't forget
She poured us some drinks to get us into the mood
I reached for the lights, she reached for my tunes
She pulled out that Red Headed Stranger, I stood up and said
I don't know you that well
Help yourself to some Haggard or some Jones
Hell, or anybody else
I don't know what you heard
I ain't that kind of guy
Yeah so don't touch my Willie,
We'll get a long just fine
She said she never met a man like me in her life
Who wouldn't share his Willie on the very first night
I said it's nothing personal, don't take it so hard
I don't pull out my Willie for just anyone
There's a lot of other records that you can choose from
So let me make myself clear before you go too far
Don't touch my Willie
I don't know you that well
Help yourself to some Haggard or some Jones
Hell, or anybody else
I don't know what you heard
I ain't that kind of guy
Yeah so don't touch my Willie,
We'll get a long just fine
Keep your hands off my Willie,
We'll get along just fine
The lyrics to Kevin Fowler's song Don't Touch My Willie describe the encounter between the singer and a woman who shows up at his house with a bottle of wine, dressed provocatively, and eager to spend the night with him. The singer, however, is not willing to share his favorite artist and album, Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger, with someone he doesn't even know. He kindly tells her to help herself to other artists such as Haggard or Jones but not Willie. The singer argues that it's not personal and that he doesn't pull out his Willie for just anyone. He further emphasizes that there are lots of other records that she can choose from, but not Willie. The chorus emphasizes the point with the line "Don't touch my Willie, I don't know you that well."
Overall, the song is a comical take on how personal the choice of music can be to each individual. The singer is portrayed as standing up for his convictions and not giving in to the woman's advances, even when it comes to sharing his music.
