Speak of the Devil

Heaven sent an angel to me to save me from life?s misery

She seemed to fall right outta the sky

I caught her here in my arms

Well life was pretty peachy things were really keen

All the sudden that ol? gal got mean

Her wings fell off she started turnin? red

And that old broken halo fell right off of her head yeah?

(chorus)

Speak of the devil here she comes

Yeah, she?s got this poor boy on the run

Oh, I swear she?s got horns and a tail

A pitchfork and a book of spells

Speak of the devil here she comes, and here I go!

Fallen angel fell from grace

They kicked her out of that heavenly place

She was a raisin? hell and breakin? all the rules

Tellin? lies, breakin? hearts, being mean and cruel

So now she?s down here on earth doin? the devil?s dirty work

Stealin? the soul of every man she can find

Sweet lips and pretty eyes oh they were a thin disguise

My little angel was a devil all along oh?

(repeat chorus)

Here I go?Tryin? to duck, tryin? to dodge, tryin? to shake her

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, I can?t escape her

She?s everywhere I go she knows my every move

Oh I know I?m bound to loose

(repeat chorus)

Speak of the devil here she comes

Yeah, she?s got this poor boy on the run

Oh, I swear she?s got horns and a tail

A pitchfork and a book of spells

Speak of the devil here she comes, and here I go

Speak of the, speak of the, speak of the devil here she comes

Speak of the, speak of the, speak of the devil here she comes

Speak of the, speak of the, speak of the devil here she comes

Speak of the devil here she comes and here I go.

Overall Meaning

In Kevin Fowler's "Speak of the Devil," the singer tells a story of how his life changed dramatically when he met an angel. Life was good, but then things changed, and she turned into a devil-like creature with horns and a pitchfork. It's about how someone can appear to be one thing but turn out to be another. It's a metaphor for someone pretending to be an angel but turning out to be a devil in disguise. In essence, the song is a cautionary tale about judging someone based on appearances alone because they might not be who they claim to be.

Line by Line Meaning

Heaven sent an angel to me to save me from life's misery
I thought I had found true love and happiness, as if God himself had sent an angel to rescue me from all my past sorrows.

She seemed to fall right outta the sky
The sudden appearance of this supposed angel was unlike anything I had ever experienced before, almost as if she had dropped out of the heavens and into my life.

I caught her here in my arms
As soon as I laid eyes on her, I knew that she was mine and I embraced her fully, hoping that we would fly away together like in a fairy tale.

Well life was pretty peachy things were really keen
For a while, everything in my life was perfect and lovely; there wasn't a cloud in the sky and my heart was brimming with joy and love.

All the sudden that ol' gal got mean
But then, without any warning or explanation, she changed in front of my very eyes and became cruel, spiteful, and harsh.

Her wings fell off she started turnin' red
As if a spell had been broken or a veil lifted, her true nature was laid bare for me to see, and I watched in horror as everything that had once seemed angelic about her melted away.

And that old broken halo fell right off of her head yeah?
Ultimately, I realized that she was not the divine being I had thought her to be — her halo, symbolizing her goodness and purity, was shattered beyond repair.

(chorus)
Throughout the chorus, the artist laments the fact that the woman he thought was an angel in disguise turned out to be a devil, haunting him everywhere he goes like a nightmare that won't end.

Fallen angel fell from grace
It became clear to me that the woman I had once revered and worshipped had actually fallen from her high status and was now wallowing in sin and corruption like any other mortal creature.

They kicked her out of that heavenly place
The real story behind this woman's supposed 'fall from grace' was that she had been exiled or punished by the forces of Heaven or God, indicating that she may have been genuinely evil or wicked.

She was a raisin' hell and breakin' all the rules
During her time as an angel, this woman was a troublemaker and scofflaw who challenged and rebelled against any authority or regulation that she deemed unfair or incorrect.

Tellin' lies, breakin' hearts, being mean and cruel
As a devil, she carried over her toxic personality traits from her days as an angel and continued to deceive, hurt, and manipulate people with her lies and spite.

So now she's down here on earth doin' the devil's dirty work
As punishment or exile, this fallen angel was condemned to live on Earth, where she could carry out wicked deeds and tempt mortals into sin through her sorcery and spells.

Stealin' the soul of every man she can find
One of the primary ways this devil does her 'dirty work' is by seducing and tricking men into giving up their virtue, self-respect, and dignity, leaving them empty and hollow like hollow husks.

Sweet lips and pretty eyes oh they were a thin disguise
The physical beauty and charm of this devil are nothing more than a ruse or distraction, designed to trick people into lowering their defenses and exposing their weaknesses.

My little angel was a devil all along oh?
The final revelation (and lament) of the song is that this 'angel' was actually a devil all along, and that the sweet and innocent girl I had fallen in love with was nothing more than a trap and a deception.

(repeat chorus)
The chorus is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the haunting and terrifying presence of this devil who continues to torment and pursue the artist wherever he goes.

Here I go... Tryin' to duck, tryin' to dodge, tryin' to shake her
The singer is desperately trying to escape the influence and grasp of the devil, using all his cunning and skill to evade her wiles and machinations.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, I can't escape her
Despite all his attempts to flee from her, the singer feels like he is trapped in a cage with the devil, with no way to escape or evade her malignant presence.

She's everywhere I go she knows my every move
Not only is the devil relentless and inescapable, she also has an uncanny ability to track and anticipate the artist's every move, making him feel incredibly vulnerable and exposed.

Oh I know I'm bound to loose
The final line of the song is a resigned and fatalistic declaration that the artist is fated to lose this battle against the devil, and that he might as well surrender to her and prepare for a life of misery and torment by her side.

I'm from Mississippi and we have our sound....beautiful blues. From my many visits to the Lone Star state, I truly love the sound of 'raw' Texas country. A work mate got me the live at Billy Bob's disc.....one of my favorites....nestled right between Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Hank Williams Jr, Skynyrd, and Hendrix. Kevin fits so well in there. I truly love your stuff! Bravo!
