Kevin Gates first began rapping in 2007, when he began making music with fellow Louisiana natives such as Webbie and Lil Boosie. Gates first received attention with his 2008 single "Get in the Way" featuring Lil Boosie. Soon after, he and Boosie would be incarcerated in separate cases. Gates would then be released in 2011 and immediately returned to recording music. He would soon earn the attention of Lil' Wayne. In early 2013, Gates released a mixtape, The Luca Brasi Story which was called "easily the best rap-related thing" in February 2013 by Spin Magazine. The Luca Brasi Story has been downloaded from popular mixtape sharing site, DatPiff, over 130,000 times.
On February 15, 2013, it was announced that Kevin Gates signed to Atlantic Records. Gates was also featured on Pusha T's 2013 mixtape as well as on Gudda Gudda's mixtape. On July 16, 2013 Gates released a street album titled Stranger Than Fiction, the street album was supported by the single "4:30".
He released his latest project By Any Means in 2014, and from there exploded in even more popularity. Mid-year made his way onto the cover of the 2014 XXL Freshman list.

My Zoro voodoo, we can go to war
My Jamaican bring the reefer in
Grabbing five, I can throw you ten
If mi carnales have a calling card
My Zoro voodoo, we can go to war
My Jamaican bring the reefer in
Grabbing five, I can throw you ten
KD said that he don’t want to sell to nobody
Probably cause he don’t want
To tell on nobody
You and them niggas ain’t scaring nobody
Just left Mississippi, they bout the grab it
You know how I’m acting say there go shawty
We jump in the Maxima and she do the driving
I like to ride passenger highway therapeutic
I type in my phone while I listen to music
Now we in Houston
Fucking with broads and miniature Thompsons
Did somebody shoot me?
Breadwinner came, pull up in Bell Austin
Promoters want posters that all of you
Know what I told em
You know it’s gone cost you, straight up
If mi carnales have a calling card
My Zoro voodoo, we can go to war
My Jamaican bring the reefer in
Grabbing five, I can throw you ten
If mi carnales have a calling card
My Zoro voodoo, we can go to war
My Jamaican bring the reefer in
Grabbing five, I can throw you ten
It’s gone jive when they come recompress
Break down, rebuild, repack, resend
I’m just saying, what you mean what it is?
Cameras on all TVs in the crib
Yeen really this, I ain’t that
What the fuck? Serve your chain up
Get the thing in the club
Panel off, call off, phone keep blowing up
Street nigga Bread Winner sign
We throwing up
Pounds in the kitchen on the floor in the bag
Butcher knife
Cutting through the blocks on the slab
Newspaper down get the shank when it shake
Country boy need 50 so I got to get him fast
Four hundred 48 grams on the scale
Money counter going dumb
I ain’t tripping on the smell
Say they really need it I can
Put it in the air
Front door step if I put it in the mail
If mi carnales have a calling card
My Zoro voodoo, we can go to war
My Jamaican bring the reefer in
Grabbing five, I can throw you ten
If mi carnales have a calling card
My Zoro voodoo, we can go to war
My Jamaican bring the reefer in
Grabbing five, I can throw you ten
The lyrics of Kevin Gates's song "Chico" delve into his experiences in the street life, particularly involving drugs and criminal activities. The repeated lines, "If mi carnales have a calling card, My Zoro voodoo, we can go to war, My Jamaican bring the reefer in, Grabbing five, I can throw you ten," highlight his connections and alliances with certain individuals who enable his ventures. The term "carnales" refers to his close associates or brothers, while "Zoro voodoo" symbolizes their ability to manipulate and control situations through their connections and knowledge.
The first verse mentions a character named KD who doesn't want to sell drugs to just anyone. It suggests that KD is cautious about revealing too much information to avoid getting caught by the authorities. Kevin Gates asserts that he and his crew are not afraid of anyone and have recently arrived in Mississippi, ready to take control. The reference to a female driving the Maxima shows Gates's trust and comfort within his immediate circles.
The second verse continues to depict a street lifestyle, with references to drugs, violence, and criminal activities. The line about "Cameras on all TVs in the crib" refers to a heightened level of security in Gates's home, likely due to his involvement in illegal activities. The mention of a "Street nigga Bread Winner sign" suggests Gates's affiliation with a gang or crew who support each other and share a common code. The lyrics also touch on the business aspect of drug dealing, emphasizing the weights, measurements, and discreet methods employed to avoid detection.
Overall, "Chico" serves as a gritty representation of Kevin Gates's experiences in the streets, highlighting the risks, connections, and dynamics that come with such a lifestyle.
