Come on Eileen
Come on Eileen

Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
But he moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried, sang along, who'd blame them
You're grown (so grown up)
So grown (so grown up) now I must say more than ever
Come on Eileen
Too ra loo ra too ra loo rye aye
And we can sing just like our fathers

Come on Eileen, oh I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah, come on Eileen

Come on Eileen

These people 'round here
Wear beat down eyes sunk in smoke dried faces
They're resigned to what their fate is
But not us, (no never) no not us (no never)
We are far to young and clever
Remember
Too ra loo ra too ra loo rye aye
And you'l hum this tune forever

Come on Eileen oh I swear (what he means)
Ah come on lets, take off everything
That pretty red dress, Eileen (tell him yes)
Ah come on lets, ah come on Eileen
That pretty red dress, Eileen (tell him yes)
Ah come on lets, ah come on Eileen, please

Come on Eileen too rye aye
Come on Eileen too rye aye
Now you're full grown
Now you have shown
Oh, Eileen

Said, come on Eileen
These things they are real and I know
How you feel
Now I must say more than ever
Things round here have changed
I say, too ra loo ra, too ra-loo rye aye

Come on Eileen
Oh, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Aah, come on Eileen

Oh, come on Eileen
Oh, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
In that dress, oh my thoughts I confess
Well, they're dirty
Come on Eileen

Come on Eileen

Overall Meaning

"Come on Eileen" is a song by Kevin Rowland & Dexys Midnight Runners that was released in 1982. The song is about a young man's passionate appeal to a girl named Eileen to take the next step in their relationship. The singer tells Eileen that he has strong feelings for her and that she means everything to him. He expresses a desire to see her in a different light by taking off her "pretty red dress" and embracing the moment. The song is an upbeat celebration of youth and love that encourages people to take chances and make the most of their time.

The opening lines of the song pay tribute to Johnny Ray, an American singer who made a huge impact on the British charts in the early 1950s. Ray's style of music was seen as melancholic but also electrifying, and his songs were able to connect with people of all ages. The use of the phrase "moved a million hearts in mono" highlights the impact that Ray had on the entertainment industry during his heyday.

The song also makes reference to the generational divide between parents and their children. The singer acknowledges that he and his generation, unlike their elders, are not resigned to their fate and are determined to make the most of their youth. They are "far too young and clever" to be held back by the conventions of the past, and are determined to live life to the fullest.

This was my little sister's favorite song. I was in college when my dad called me late at night and told me to come home immediately. As I drove, I prayed harder than I've ever prayed, begging God that it not be her, but ... she was already gone, killed by a drunk driver at just 15 years of age. Susan was the sweetest, friendliest, most fun-loving girl on the planet, and she was robbed of a beautiful long life. They say that time heals all wounds, but 40+ years later it just isn't true. For years this song brought horribly sad memories, but now at age 63, I find strange comfort in the tune.

โคmy name is Eileen and I will have this song played at my funeral when my casket is being taken out. I always ran late when my husband and I were going somewhere. He called "come on Eileen " before this song ever came out. At 80 years old, this song still makes me smile. Love it!!
