Told everyone I turned my phone off
Didn't ask for help, and now I'm lost
Life comes in phases
Consequences and mistakes
I'm sorry that it's taken me so long
Give me half an hour
Or better yet a full one
Only sweet until it all comes sour
But life is what you make it
And then there's more to know
Gatekeeper
Can you show me more to life
Mainly I've been living out of spite
Grim Reaper
Just give me one more night
I need another chance to say goodbye
I shouldn't have to die to feel alive
Here's the thing with disappearing
You can yell and no-one hears ya
Times like this I need an ear
When I finally have so much to say
Wish I could see your face
And do what I had to stop the tears
Sister, sister please know that I'm sorry
I wish it could've stopped me
From falling off that hill
I'm only sweet until it all comes sour
But life is what you make it until it gets too real
Gatekeeper
Can you show me more to life
Mainly I've been living out of spite
Grim Reaper
Just give me one more night
I need another chance to say goodbye
I shouldn't have to die to feel alive
In Khalid's song "Alive" the lyrics explore themes of loneliness, isolation, regret, and the desire for a second chance at life. The opening lines describe a state of disconnection from the world around him, with "Unread texts and missed calls" suggesting a lack of communication with others. The lines "Told everyone I turned my phone off / Didn't ask for help, and now I'm lost" imply the sense of being overwhelmed and unable to cope, leading to a sense of isolation and separation from others.
The main refrain of the song is directed towards the "Gatekeeper" and the "Grim Reaper," both symbolic figures that represent different aspects of life and death. The Gatekeeper is asked to "show me more to life", while the Grim Reaper is asked for "one more night" to say goodbye. Both figures represent the desire for a second chance, a chance to start over and feel alive again.
The central message of the song seems to be that life is unpredictable and can be difficult, but that it is also full of possibilities and opportunities. The lyrics suggest that we should try to make the most of each moment, to live our lives to the fullest and to not be afraid to take chances. Ultimately, the song is a reminder of the preciousness of life and that we should try to treasure each and every moment.
