Mark and DJ's roots are in R&B, hip hop and gospel having played within the same gospel band for years. Both professional musicians, Mark began teaching Laura how to play bass in the summer of 2009. As such, Laura quickly developed a huge passion for the instrument and the aesthetic it brought to music she loved. Having worked studiously on developing her skills, both Mark and Laura were invited to tour with Ninja Tune's YPPAH supporting Bonobo across his 2010 American tour. The tour galvanised the two of them to start making music together more seriously, sowing the first seeds of Khruangbin, with DJ the natural go to for drums. Having kept in touch, Bonobo included Khruangbin's 'A Calf Born In Winter' on his 2013 'Late Night Tales' compilation. In addition to increasing the Stateside following the band has built, the release has helped Khruangbin in topping both the US & UK 'Last FM' fastest growing artists whilst 'A Calf Born In Winter' continues to be one of the most popular single downloads from the compilation.

Shida
The lyrics of Khruangbin's song "Shida" are quite simple and repetitive, consisting only of the word "Shida" repeated four times. However, this simplicity in itself speaks to the band's ability to convey emotion and meaning through minimalistic music and lyrics. The song is named after a woman named Shida, who was an artist and designer from Tanzania. Despite her talent, Shida faced numerous obstacles in her pursuit of creating art, including poverty and the cultural stigma around her gender. The song can therefore be interpreted as a tribute to Shida and her resilience in the face of adversity.
Through the repetition of her name, Khruangbin captures both her struggle and her strength, while the slow tempo and dreamy melody of the instrumentals add a sense of longing and reflection. The song seems to be an ode to the power of art and creativity to transcend time and place, as the band notes in the song's description on YouTube that "She has left this earthly plane, but her spirit remains within all those she has touched." Overall, "Shida" is a powerful meditation on the human spirit and its ability to persevere through challenges, obstacles, and even death.

Shida
The repeated use of the word 'Shida' sets the tone of the song and possibly references a feeling of urgency or intensity in the situation being depicted.
The lack of additional lyrics in the song could be interpreted as a way to emphasize the power of the instrumental music and allow the listener to create their own meanings based on emotion and personal experiences.
