Superstition
Kina Grannis feat. Imaginary Future Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Very superstitious, writings on the wall,
Very superstitious, ladders bout' to fall,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin' glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past

When you believe in things that you don't understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain't the way

Very superstitious, wash your face and hands,
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can,
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin' strong,
You don't wanna save me, sad is my song

When you believe in things that you don't understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain't the way, yeh, yeh

Very superstitious, nothin' more to say,
Very superstitious, the devil's on his way,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin' glass,
Seven years of bad luck, good things in your past

When you believe in things that you don't understand,
Then you suffer, Superstition ain't the way, no, no, no

Overall Meaning

Kina Grannis feat. Imaginary Future's song Superstition explores the theme of belief in superstitions and the consequences that stem from it. The repetition of the phrase "Very superstitious" emphasizes the irrationality of the belief in superstitions. The lyrics describe various superstitions such as the belief that breaking a mirror results in seven years of bad luck or the fear of walking under a ladder. The mention of the thirteen-month-old baby adds to the supernatural tone of the song.

The lyrics suggest that the belief in superstitions causes suffering because it stems from fear and ignorance of the unknown. The line "When you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer" conveys that the consequences of superstitions are self-inflicted because they are based on irrational fears. The repetition of "Superstition ain't the way" emphasizes the message of the song that the belief in superstitions leads to negative consequences and is not a rational way of living.

Overall, Kina Grannis feat. Imaginary Future's song Superstition is a powerful message to question irrational beliefs and to not let fear dictate one's actions. It advocates for rational thinking and living life free of superstitions.

I think they used autotune to give it that funky tone.

I just discovered you guys a few weeks ago. I had started a new playlist and added the first song I heard of yours... Then the second and third etc... The whole playlist is both of you singing together or separately. I think you may just be my favorites. Thanks for making some pretty beautiful noises for my ears. 🎶

Love it. <3

Lena Marie

Love you guys but why autotune when both of you have phenomenal voices!?

Amanzi Umoya

Autotune was for styling.  They were going for an electronic feel.  Like Daft Punk...

I like the autotune. It adds a little something, kind of like how it does in Woods by Bon Iver. And ultimately, it's an artistic choice—I don't think we really have the right to complain about it.
