In 2013, while still a teenager, Marshall released the first King Krule album, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, on XL in the U.K. and True Panther in the U.S. Marshall then collaborated with his brother Jack for the relatively fluid, more electronic A New Place 2 Drown. Released in 2015 and credited to Archy Marshall, its physical edition was packaged with a 208-page book of poetry, photography, and art. King Krule fully reactivated in 2017 with a handful of varied singles -- the dreamlike ballad "Czech One," the mid-tempo rocker "Dum Surfer," and the rumbling "Half Man Half Shark," all featuring saxophone from Ignacio Salvadores -- that led up to The Ooz, an hour-long follow-up written during a three-year period.
The Dream
King Krule Lyrics

I saw pylons stretch to the east
I wasn't sure at all why our love
Becomes sorrow when we're this free
Man, a firework of dogs to walk with me
Felt this warm
Marching forth
Marching forth
We could be
The dream
The dream
The dream
The dream
The dream
The dream
The opening line of the song, "stop makin' sense of things" sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. It suggests a desire to escape from the constraints of logic and understanding, perhaps in favor of a more intuitive and emotional way of experiencing the world. The imagery of "pylons stretch[ing] to the east" adds to this feeling of disorientation and uncertainty, as if the singer is lost in a landscape that is both familiar and alien. The reference to "love" and "sorrow" hints at a deeper emotional struggle - one that is related to the anxieties and fears that come with being in a relationship. The idea that freedom can lead to sadness and heartbreak is a paradoxical one, but it speaks to the complexity of human emotions and the ways in which our desires can sometimes lead us astray.
The repeated chorus of "The dream" suggests a longing for something that is just out of reach - a utopia or idealized version of reality that is always just beyond our grasp. This dream may represent different things to different people - for some, it might be a feeling of complete inner peace or contentment, while for others it might be a more tangible goal, like success or happiness. Furthermore, the phrase "we could be" implies that this dream is not necessarily unattainable - it is something that could be achieved, if only we were able to overcome our fears and doubts and reach out for it.
Overall, "The Dream" is a song that is concerned with the complexities of human emotion and the desire to escape from the confines of our rational minds. It speaks to a universal longing for something better - a more fulfilling and meaningful existence. The lyrics are evocative and poetic, and the use of imagery and metaphor adds to the dreamlike, surreal quality of the song.
