Big Star Little Star
Kings Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As she took the stage
But she was convinced if she got up there
That she'd be discovered some day
So she belted it
She hit the high notes fearlessly
Oh, she melted them
She brought them to their feet
She was a big star
At Banana Joe's Bar
Where she sang karaoke every night
She said if you work hard to get where you are
It feels good in the hot spotlight
She was a big star
She made the local cable shows
Where the camera fell in love with her face
After a couple of weekends
The groupies were crawling all over the place
And she signed autographs
Like she was Garth Brooks in a skirt
And in the aftermath
That small time town was hers
She was a big star
At Banana Joe's Bar
Where she sang karaoke every night
She said if you work hard to get where you are
It feels good in the hot spotlight
She was a big star
Hey, she doesn't care anymore
That her high school girlfriends cut her down
The only thought she entertains is where they aren't
And where she is now
A few old neighbors swear they are certain
She slept her way to the top
She knows you don't get where you're goin'
Unless you got something they ain't got
So she sings tonight
To twenty thousand plus
And the young girls scream out loud
Man that could be us
She's a big star
She eats caviar
Just before she performs every night
She says if you work hard to get where you are
It feels good in the hot spotlight
She's a big star
The lyrics of "Big Star" by Kings explore the journey of a young woman who dreams of becoming a star one day. She starts small in a karaoke bar, but slowly gains fame and attention, even recording a local cable show. Despite being initially insecure, she eventually overcomes her fear and performs fearlessly in front of thousands of people. The song highlights the fact that success does not come overnight, but rather through hard work and determination. It also touches upon the idea that some people may accuse successful individuals of sleeping their way to the top, which can often be untrue and hurtful.
The song starts with the young woman being aware of her insecurities but still taking to the stage to perform. She believes that she will be discovered someday, and her belief in herself and her abilities helps her rise to stardom. The song also suggests that the gossip and negativity of her high school friends no longer affect her, as she is now focused on where she is and where she can go.
The chorus repeatedly emphasizes her status as a big star, and how it takes hard work and dedication to get there. The lyrics also spotlight how she doesn't care what people have to say about her anymore, as she's achieved what she set out to do. Lastly, the song touches upon the idea that success is not given but earned, and that it's necessary to have passion, creativity, and uniqueness to stand out.
