Wells' success in the 1950s and 1960s was so enormous that she still ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of the Billboard country charts according to historian Joel Whitburn's book "The Top 40 Country Hits", behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. Wells was the third country music artist, behind Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 as well as being the seventh woman and first Caucasian woman to receive the honor. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Kitty Wells Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How much I need you so in every way
I hope you will guide me as only you can do
Hold my hands down beside me I'm counting on you
I'm counting on you dear from the dawn on each day
To always come through dear in your kind lovin' way
If you knew just how deeply I feel things you do
The lyrics of Kitty Wells's song I'm Counting on You appear to be a plea to a loved one, expressing the singer's reliance on their partner's guidance and support. The first verse discusses the limitations of words in conveying the depth of feeling and need that the singer has for their partner. The second verse expresses a sense of trust in the partner's love and kindness, as well as a desire to have their partner understand their emotions more fully. The chorus summarizes the overall sentiment, with the singer emphasizing their complete dependence on their partner.
The song likely resonated with many listeners, particularly women, who may have identified with the singer's sense of vulnerability and need for support from their partners. It also reflects the cultural norms of the time, which placed a strong emphasis on women relying on men for emotional and financial support.
Overall, the lyrics of I'm Counting on You portray a sentiment that is simultaneously tender and vulnerable, as well as a reflection of the social norms of the time. It is a poignant reminder of the complex dynamics that exist within love relationships, and the importance of relying on one's partner in times of need.

I really think someone should be bringing those old songs into the future now in country and get some of the new artists to get some old country going. This is a terrific song, great meaning, great melody, we need this back in country music.
