Wells' success in the 1950s and 1960s was so enormous that she still ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of the Billboard country charts according to historian Joel Whitburn's book "The Top 40 Country Hits", behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. Wells was the third country music artist, behind Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 as well as being the seventh woman and first Caucasian woman to receive the honor. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Even though I know what your game is I still cling to your touch and go heart
You only want my company when you are feeling blue
Just when I think you care a little there's someone new
Though I know how hopeless my chance is I'm just a slave for your touch and go heart
Touch and go that's how...
Kitty Wells's song "Touch And Go Heart" is a poignant depiction of the ups and downs of love. The lyrics speak to the unpredictable nature of a relationship in which one party is never fully committed, yet the other clings to hope. The phrase "touch and go" is used to describe the fickle behavior of the object of the singer's affection. They are together one moment and apart the next, leaving the singer feeling powerless and at the mercy of their whims.
Despite knowing that the object of her affection is playing games, the singer is unable to resist their charms. They only come around when they need her, and just as quickly move on to someone new. Despite this, the singer continues to hold out hope for a deeper connection. She is a slave to their "touch and go heart," unable to break free from the cycle of hurt and longing. The song is a powerful reminder of the pain that can come with falling in love with someone who is not fully committed.
