Wells' success in the 1950s and 1960s was so enormous that she still ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of the Billboard country charts according to historian Joel Whitburn's book "The Top 40 Country Hits", behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. Wells was the third country music artist, behind Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 as well as being the seventh woman and first Caucasian woman to receive the honor. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The Waltz of the Angels
Kitty Wells Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The waltz of the angels I hear each time I hold you tightly in these arms of mine
It's surely from heaven this music I hear
When your lips say I love you in waltz time my dear
There must be a power much higher than I a writer of love songs way up in the sky
The maker of roses of love sweet and true
And the waltz of the angels the moonlight and you
Oh hurry my darling to my waiting arms I'll love you forever and keep you from harm
We know love is endless our hearts have been kissed
By the waltz of the angels and far beyond this
There must be a power much higher than I a writer of love songs way up in the sky
The maker of roses of love sweet and true
And the waltz of the angels he wrote just for you
In Kitty Wells's song "Waltz of the Angels," the singer describes the powerful and divine force of love that she experiences when she is with her beloved. She invokes the image of the waltz of the angels, which she hears each time she holds her lover tightly. This music, she believes, is surely from heaven itself, created by a writer of love songs who resides way up in the sky - a maker of roses of love sweet and true. The singer is humbled by this force, acknowledging that there must be a power much higher than herself that has orchestrated this kind of love.
The singer urges her lover to hurry to her waiting arms so they may share in this endless love that they have discovered. She fervently promises to love and protect her lover always. The waltz of the angels, she believes, has kissed their hearts and taken them far beyond the earthly plane. Through this song, the singer expresses the intense, overwhelming feeling of being in love, and credits its power to a divine source beyond herself.
