License To Kill
Knight Gladys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh
Oh oh
I feel, I need, I've got to hold on to your love, ooh

Hey baby, thought you were the one who tried to run away
Ooh, baby, wasn't I the one who made you want to stay?
Please don't bet that you'll ever escape me
Once I get my sights on you

Got a license to kill (to kill)
And you know I'm going straight for your heart
(Got a license to kill)
Got a license to kill (to kill)
Anyone who tries to tear us apart
(Got a license to kill)
License to kill, ooh

Hey baby, think you need a friend to stand here by your side?
Yes, you do (your side)
Ooh, baby, now you can depend on me to make things right (things right)
Please don't bet that you'll ever escape me
Once I get my sights on you

Got a license to kill (to kill)
And you know I'm going straight for your heart
(Got a license to kill)
Got a license to kill (to kill)
Anyone who tries to tear us apart
(Got a license to kill)

Got a license to kill (to kill)
And you know I'm going straight for your heart
(Got a license to kill)
Got a license to kill (to kill)
Anyone who tries to tear us apart
(Got a license to kill)

Say that somebody tries to make a move on you
In the blink of an eye, I will be there too
And they better know why I'm gonna make them 'em pay
Till their dying day
Till their dying day
Till their dying day

Got a license to kill (to kill)
And you know I'm going straight for your heart, baby
(Got a license to kill)
Got a license to kill
Anyone who tries to tear us apart
(Got a license to kill)

Got a license to kill (to kill)
And you know I'm going straight for your heart
(Got a license to kill)
Got a license to kill
Anyone who tries to tear us apart
(Got a license to kill)
License to kill

Gotta hold onto your loving
License to kill, ooh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "License to Kill" by Knight Gladys appear to be about a person who is desperately trying to hold onto their partner, even to the point of obsessiveness. The singer seems to be saying that they will do whatever it takes to keep their lover from leaving, including using violent methods if necessary. The lyrics also suggest that the singer believes that their love is justified and that they should be given a "license to kill" anyone who tries to interfere with their relationship. The phrase "license to kill" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the singer's determination to protect their love at any cost.

The overall message of the song is somewhat disturbing, as it suggests that violence and obsession are acceptable means of keeping someone from leaving a relationship. However, it is possible that the song is intended to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, with the singer exaggerating their emotions for dramatic effect. Alternatively, the lyrics may be meant to be taken metaphorically, with the "license to kill" representing a metaphorical license to be fiercely protective of one's relationships.

Licence to Kill is so under-appreciated. Not only is it one of the best Bond themes of all, it's one of Gladys' best songs.

@elamplough1

I'd say that the movie is under-appreciated but most Bond fans have always loved this theme.
