Born in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo to a Congolese mother and Ghanaian father, Koffi grew up in Kinshasa.
He went to France to study, while in Paris, he began playing the guitar and writing songs. On his return to Congo he was a member of Viva la Musica, Papa Wemba's band. Koffi repopularized the slower style of soukous, which had fallen out of fashion. He dubbed this style Tcha Tcho, and it gained popularity outside Congo. Koffi's music can be quite controversial, taking on current events and topics considered taboo in some conservative societies. He has also participated in the salsa music project Africando.

The song “RAS” by Koffi Olomidé is a powerful and motivational piece that is directed towards inspiring the youth to be diligent in achieving their goals. The song begins with a call to action to begin the new school year with energy, enthusiasm, and focus. Koffi Olomidé attributes various traits and qualities to influential people like Robert Brazza, who is described as the “Champion,” and the “Motivator of all Motivators,” and Papa Bamba, who is referred to as the “Best asset of a man.” In the song, Koffi Olomidé encourages his listeners to work hard, be bold, and have faith in God because it is their determination that will make a difference in their lives.
Koffi Olomidé also addresses societal issues such as corruption and dishonesty, urging everyone to be truthful and avoid indulging in corrupt practices that hinder progress. He mentions some of his peers in the song, such as Ramy Amissi and Bosco Boble, who are referenced in the song as followers and supporters of his message. The song ends with a list of names, including Lorenzo Tutu, Roba Ize, Bola Simon, Mbongo, Fula Mambo, and Ousmane Callugi, which could potentially be the names of other supporters of Koffi Olomidé's message.
