The band's first taste of mainstream success came with the release of their fourth album Wild and Peaceful (1973), which contained the US top-ten singles "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging". Kool & the Gang subsequently entered a period of decline before they reached a second commercial peak between 1979 and 1986 following their partnership with Brazilian musician and producer Eumir Deodato and the addition of singer James "J.T." Taylor to the lineup. Their most successful albums of this period include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980), and Emergency (1984), their highest selling album with two million copies sold in the US. Their hit singles during this period included "Ladies' Night", the US No. 1 "Celebration", "Get Down on It", "Joanna", "Misled", and "Cherish". The band continues to perform worldwide, including as support for Van Halen in 2012 and their fiftieth-anniversary tour in 2014.
Kool & the Gang have won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, and, in 2006, a Music Business Association Chairman's Award for artistic achievement. As well the band has been inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame and been bestowed with a MOBO Award for Outstanding Achievement, the Soul Train Legend Award, the Marian Anderson Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2007, the band was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. During 2018, the Bells, Brown, and Taylor were also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received their first-time nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. Their discography includes 23 studio albums and almost 70 singles. They have sold 7.5 million and 4.5 million RIAA-certified albums and singles, respectively, in the United States. Worldwide, they have sold 70 million albums.

Kool & The Gang Lyrics

This is the night you'll see the light
Tonight, oh
This is the night you'll see the light
My sixteenth birthday I was so shy
Not yet a man but ready to try
Music playing people saying
Walked into the room I couldn't hardly see
There she was moving closer to me
She told me her name before I could speak
Took my hand and then she said these words to me
Tonight, oh
This is the night you'll see the light
That's what she said me
Tonight, oh
This is the night you'll see the light
Hey beautiful girl so lovely tonight
Show me the way show me the light
Music playing people swaying
Next thing I knew we started to groove
Dancing and dancing moving so free
A feeling of love had come over me
I held her close and knew it was right
What a perfect surprise I had finally seen the light
(repeat)
Tonight, you will finally see the light baby
Tonight, you will finally see the light baby
Tonight, you will finally see the light
You will see, ooh you will see the light
Tonight you will finally see the light
Oh yeah
Oh come on I want to dance with you
Oh come on I want to dance
Oh come on I want to dance with you
Oh come on I want to dance with you
The song "Tonight" is a reflection of an unforgettable night in one's life. The lyrics tell the story of a young man's sixteenth birthday party where he met a beautiful girl who caught his eye. At first, he was shy and unsure of himself but as the night progressed, the music began to play and the people started to sway, he gained the courage to ask the girl to dance. The girl took his hand and whispered to him that tonight he will finally see the light. This became a turning point in the singer's life as he experienced a feeling of love that washed over him.
The message of the song is about embracing new experiences and taking chances. It encourages us to overcome our fears and try new things. As the lyrics say, "tonight is the night you'll see the light." This light can be interpreted as a symbol of enlightenment and understanding that comes with opening oneself up to new things. It's a reminder to seize the moment and not let opportunities pass us by.
Overall, "Tonight" is a feel-good song that takes us on a journey back to our teenage years when first love and unforgettable moments were everything. It's a reminder that life is a dance, and sometimes we just need to take a chance and let ourselves be swept away by the rhythm.
