The band's first taste of mainstream success came with the release of their fourth album Wild and Peaceful (1973), which contained the US top-ten singles "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging". Kool & the Gang subsequently entered a period of decline before they reached a second commercial peak between 1979 and 1986 following their partnership with Brazilian musician and producer Eumir Deodato and the addition of singer James "J.T." Taylor to the lineup. Their most successful albums of this period include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980), and Emergency (1984), their highest selling album with two million copies sold in the US. Their hit singles during this period included "Ladies' Night", the US No. 1 "Celebration", "Get Down on It", "Joanna", "Misled", and "Cherish". The band continues to perform worldwide, including as support for Van Halen in 2012 and their fiftieth-anniversary tour in 2014.
Kool & the Gang have won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, and, in 2006, a Music Business Association Chairman's Award for artistic achievement. As well the band has been inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame and been bestowed with a MOBO Award for Outstanding Achievement, the Soul Train Legend Award, the Marian Anderson Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2007, the band was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. During 2018, the Bells, Brown, and Taylor were also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received their first-time nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. Their discography includes 23 studio albums and almost 70 singles. They have sold 7.5 million and 4.5 million RIAA-certified albums and singles, respectively, in the United States. Worldwide, they have sold 70 million albums.

Too Hot
Kool & the Gang Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
High school sweethearts
Love was so brand new
We took the vows of man and wife
Forever, for life
I remember how we made our way
A little patience, the time we pray
Feelin' the pain, girl when you lose
Oh it's too hot, too hot, lady
Gotta run for shelter
Gotta run for shade
It's too hot, too hot, lady
We gotta cool this anger
What a mess we made
So long ago you were my love, oh my love
Flyin' high we never took the time
To stop and feel the need
Funny how those years go by
Changing you, changing me
I remember love's fever
In our hearts, girl and in our minds
Can't imagine that this love is through
Feelin' the pain, girl when you lose
Oh it's too hot, too hot, lady
Gotta run for shelter
Gotta run for shade
It's too hot, too hot, lady
Gotta cool this anger
What a mess that we've made
So long ago you were my love
Feeling the pain
Oh, it's too hot, too hot, lady
Gotta run for shelter
Gotta run for shade
It's too hot, too hot, lady
Gotta cool this anger
From this mess that we've made
It's too hot, too hot, lady
Gotta run for shelter
Gotta run for shade
It's too hot, so so hot, lady
Gotta cool this anger
Oh gotta cool this mess we've made
It's so so hot, baby
Yes it's so hot
I just can't take it, I can't stand no more baby
We were once lovers
We took our vows
Of man and wife, forever, woah
Baby, please won't you listen
It hurt me so bad, well I know I've got to leave
It's too hot, gotta run for shelter babe, gotta run for shade
It's too hot, it's so so hot baby
Gotta cool this anger, gotta cool this mess we've made
It's so warm, so warm, it's hot baby, yeah
The lyrics to βToo Hotβ by Kool & The Gang are a reflection of a couple who fell in love at the age of seventeen, got married and now the love has all disappeared. The song describes a relationship gone wrong as the couple fights and bickers to the point where it is too hot to handle. They argue and it seems as though there is no more love left between them. The heat in this song is the anger and pain that the couple is feeling as their relationship deteriorates.
The first few verses describe the happiness that the couple had when they first fell in love. They were high school sweethearts, and love was new and fresh, and they took vows of man and wife, forever. The couple had some patience and prayed at times when they needed it. The song highlights how love can simply cool off especially when we assume it is permanent. It reminds us how people change, and as a result relationships do too. People also become more demanding and expect more from one another.
The chorus emphasizes how things have changed, and it is too hot to handle. The couple has to find shelter, and they have to find a way of cooling down their anger. They have to come together and work things out. The song emphasizes how it is too hot to handle as the couple had a mess of a relationship. They did not take the time to stop and feel the need and flew by the seat of their pants. The song is a warning to all couples out there who do not stop and consider the present in their relationship.
