When he moved back to Paris in 1986, he started working on material that led to two albums : Assiko City and An Sol Mè. These were followed by tours during which he built up a loyal following. This is due to the fact that Numpuby is also very much a live performer of many talents, alternating between jokes, grimaces and using his cheeks to imitate the sound of a balafon. Although largely based on Assiko, his compositions also feature finely patterned traditional African music, Afro-American folk, blues, jazz and Brazilian and Cuban accents.
Kristo recently recorded with drummer Denis Tchangou (Mory Kante, Papa Wemba ...) an album entirely devoted to the chanson legend Georges Brassens. The result is “Brassens in Africa”, an album that illustrates the beauty of cultural crossovers but also a warm tribute to the French poet on African rhythms.

Elle cheminait sans parapluie
J'en avais un, volé, sans doute
Le matin même à un ami
Courant alors à sa rescousse
Je lui propose un peu d'abri
En séchant l'eau de sa frimousse
D'un air très doux, elle m'a dit "oui"
Un petit coin de parapluie
Contre un coin de paradis
Elle avait quelque chose d'un ange
Un petit coin de paradis
Contre un coin de parapluie
Je ne perdais pas au change, pardi
Chemin faisant, que ce fut tendre
D'ouïr à deux le chant joli
Que l'eau du ciel faisait entendre
Sur le toit de mon parapluie
J'aurais voulu, comme au déluge
Voir sans arrêt tomber la pluie
Pour la garder, sous mon refuge
Quarante jours, quarante nuits
Un petit coin de parapluie
Contre un coin de paradis
Elle avait quelque chose d'un ange
Un petit coin de paradis
Contre un coin de parapluie
Je ne perdais pas au change, pardi
Mais bêtement, même en orage
Les routes vont vers des pays
Bientôt le sien fit un barrage
À l'horizon de ma folie
Il a fallu qu'elle me quitte
Après m'avoir dit grand merci
Et je l'ai vue toute petite
Partir gaiement vers mon oubli
The lyrics of Kristo Numpuby's song "Le Parapluie" tell the story of a chance encounter on a rainy day. The singer sees a woman walking along the road in the pouring rain, and he offers her shelter under his stolen umbrella. They share a tender moment together, listening to the sound of the raindrops on the umbrella. The singer wishes that it would rain for forty days and forty nights, just so that he could keep the woman with him.
The woman eventually leaves, as her own path takes her in a different direction. The singer is left with the memory of their brief encounter, feeling grateful for the small moment of intimacy and connection that they shared. The lyrics are simple but poignant, capturing the fleeting nature of human connection and the bittersweet feeling of parting ways.
