This make's me laigh so much. I love how The Thing pretty much knew it was only a matter of time before it was discovered, making that expression at 0:57. It goes to show that this creature ain't some mindless killing machine. It actually understands and knows when to be all "Well shit...I guess that's it....aah man.."

Except, it didn't try to escape. It latched on to Windows and tried to assimilate him. This is the equivalent of a female preying mantis getting spooked by a predator and immediately trying to mate with another mantis while the predator keeps drawing closer. Because, much like The Thing, the mating practice of a mantis ends with one half of the mated pair being killed.

@Username I mean, im not a kid in the 80's with little exposure, yet I enjoyed the movie so idk what to tell you. Almost NO movie suspends disbelief for me because I know that its a movie? Despite how good the effects are. You say im easily impressed but im actually not, I literally just explained to you that other movies from this time do nothing for me, as well as most movies from the current era. Bad acting, with good effects is the aim most of them take. I guess the way I scrutinize a movie goes beyond the effects the movie has.

@The Fallen: The effects are garbage, terrible. Universally. If it legitimately suspends your disbelief for even a fraction of a second, you're a wirehead that's easily impressed. FOR IT'S TIME - fairly impressive. For a kid in the 80's with little exposure to anything even half realistic, very impressive. It doesn't hold up whatsoever, in any way, to anyone with the capacity for honest scrutiny.

An the other hand, the story is great, I love the story. The idea, I absolutely love unconditionally. The remake, or sequel, etc., is much better, though, in terms of presenting the idea. Also, much more cohesive and frightening. You bring the acting, character development, and energy of the original to the remake/sequel/etc. - unironically a 10/10.

As it is now, both are lacking substantially - the original even moreso.

I was at a showing of this at a movie theater last year. It was pretty packed. In the beginning they asked who was watching it for the first time and the guy next to me was one of only a handful that raised their hands. When that moment happened I swear he almost leaped out of his seat!

1:14 I love how sometimes you can tell how an effect was done, like here. All the props were glued to a piece of floor that could tilt and turn, so they could just tilt the floor to make it look like the blood was crawling.

@Kamel Ben Slama I don't think it's reversed, it's just an upside-down shot of a stunt performer (in makeup) landing on the ground. There's a piece of ceiling tile that bounces up towards the ceiling after breaking off right before 1:43, so it's not a reversed shot but just an upside down one.

I grew up watching this with my dad. It was his favorite movie. I first watched it with him when I was just 4 years old. So you can imagine how traumatizing this was for a small child in the early 90’s.

But I didn’t realize until I got older just how great this movie was. The spectacular practical effects/animatronics, the misdirection towards Gary, Copper, Clark and MacReady being things when really it was Palmer/Norris/Blair who actually were, the vague ending, etc. Also, Kurt Russell does an amazing job... This movie is a true work of art.

Well my dad passed away just a couple years later when I was only 7 years old. But still to this day, this is my all time favorite movie.

Honestly this one of my all time favorite movie scenes, it was shot very well, has a great premise, it feels super suspenseful with great drama between the characters, there’s an air of mystery since you don’t know who is and isn’t The Thing, and I don’t think anyone was expecting the crazy reaction of The Thing’s cells with the wire, and of course the special effects work is stellar. CGI will never be able to compete in the horror genre against actual practical effects, that’s why the orcs in Lord of the Rings look so much better than the misshapen thalidomide flipper babies that are the orcs in The Hobbit because the orcs in LOTR were actually really there they weren’t just a man covered in mocap balls trying to be one. The Thing prequel had the same problem since it relied heavily on poorly made CGI and by our standards today it looks pretty bad, while the original The Thing will always look good because it’s the real deal, when you see a monster on screen it is actually there which looks a lot better than some out of place CGI monster.

I think Childs noticed how MacReady seemed to be hoping that Clark was a Thing, he is told by Blair to watch him closely and Clark is the one who lunges at MacReady with a knife. MacReady even looks over at Clark's body almost like he is starting to question whether this test of his is working.

Carpenter's hability is just overwhelming.. the way he distracts the expectator with some talking just before the blood sample scare is so subtle.. also the absense of music, being replaced only with screams of tied people that have a small screen time (leaving it up to us to imagine what's goin on) makes it terrifying to watch

What I love the most about this movie is how the characters acted and reacted like real people. They were nice to each other until paranoia set in, then they started fighting. No one was a real jerk to start with. Clark was slightly odd, but only because he preferred being with the dogs.
We genuinely feel the panic on these well written characters.

The part that scares me the most about this scene is just how long it takes to transform, almost as if it’s giving a preview of what it’s going to do to you once it’s ready. Also how long it takes to kill windows is pretty creepy as well.

What made this movie truly terrifying was the lack of music. It built up the bone-chilling surprise for us, the audience, without those annoying and obvious cliche music scores that would give away the shock.

Movies like Halloween have suspenseful music playing when Michael Myers appears onscreen and it works so well together because you know that the boogeyman is coming for you.

But in THIS scene, there’s NO music playing to indicate who is The Thing. Period.
Just hair raising, heart pounding silence is present when the parasite is about to be revealed.

Smart how Carpenter decided to do a shot from the same angle on the blood tested before the tainted blood. Great way to keep the audience off guard, as well as not make it obvious you're hiding the practical effect that causes the blood to jump up.

I wondered things like this til I played enough Among Us. If you're outnumbered, the best option is to let the most paranoid people take each other out first, like in the classic Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street." There was a slim chance based on the conversation with Garry that they'd have jumped some innocent people ahead in the line or done something else reckless before getting to Palmer.

The one element I loved about the movie was there was no redeeming quality about it whatsoever. The bleak location, the grueling weather, the raging paranoia that gripped everyone. One death, after another, after another.... John Carpenter was one of the best. One thing that bothered me in this scene is when David Keith calls MacReady a murderer, which he was totally justified in shooting Clark because Clark lunged at him with the knife. Plus, Keith says the test does not mean shit, then believes it when Clark's blood does not react.

This scene is by far one of my favorites. Not only is it very serious at first, and the idea is genius, but when Palmer is revealed it goes from serious to hilarious. I still respect this movie as a serious one, but this gave it that little touch. Garry's face expressions never cease to make me laugh. They did a very good job with this scene either way (except maybe the flinging Windows around part). People always criticize Windows for not torching the Palmer-Thing, but I think it was more out of fear and amazement of the creature, as he has a moment of pause before it grabs him. And, although it's not in this video, Garry and Childs are hilarious after he kills Windows.

I’ve always wondered if the process of assimilation was painful, and I’m still wondering if the ways the people are assimilated in the 2011 thing like Jonas and the Face Hugger, were painful. I can here Windows screaming in pain when Palmer starts to assimilate him. I’m also wondering if the transformation is painful, and they can’t express that because the thing is controlling them.

Seriously my all time favorite horror movie! Its got great tension, outstanding effects, and a cast that plays very well off of each other. What more could you ask for in a horror movie?!

Andrei Olteanu honestly I have to disagree I thought Aliens was pretty cool. Alien was definitely a better horror movie, but aliens is a better sci-fi action movie.

I think Alien (not to be mistaken with ALIENS, which is a pile of SHIT) is a little better (less effects, more suspense), HOWEVER, The Thing has more soul to it. I know it feels weird when talking about a horror movie, but it genuinely feels like the cast and crew channelled their love to make this masterpiece.

Why Macready gave windows the flamethrower first I'll never understand. Windows had to be be the most afraid of THE THING from the start. I love how that character was consistent through out the whole movie though. Great writing and acting.

CGI is good when used prooerly. It's the abuse of it and the effects team's skills that can break or make a good computer effects moment. Besides, CGI has been used in cinema ever since the late 70s, with films like Westworld (the 70s version) being prominent examples.

@ZENIGMATV It's unfair to generalize modern film as a whole. There are lots of good films being made today, not only that, but when this film came out people were calling it garbage (it's not, but was just the opinion back then) Just to add onto it, this film is a remake! (Of the 1950 film Thing fr Another World)

The way to catch the imposter was genius.

What I think wasn't so "genius" was to put everyone of the suspects too next to each other. They could have saved a life if the expedition medic (if there was any) had aknowledged the risk of contagion once the suspect was discovered.

Also, they shouldn't have relied only in the flamethrowers. Knowing they could fail, they should have crafted molotovs for the ones who had no access to the weapon.
