Nonetheless, Kwabs never had any notion of seriously pursuing music as a career until his unadorned YouTube cover of Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like a Star" became a massive viral hit, racking up 100,000 views. He was approached with a management contract, and decided to take music farther. He released a few original songs on YouTube, leading to his being hotly tipped by MTV and BBC radio and securing a deal with Atlantic. On his 2014 debut EP, Wrong or Right, he collaborated with London-born, Vienna-based producer Sohn. The melancholy songs on the EP set his smooth, powerful baritone voice to a minimalist, synthesized backing somewhat reminiscent of the Human League. The style was dubbed "Synth&B," and the collaboration drew comparisons to that between Seal and Adamski back in the '90s. A second EP, Pray for Love, and a more upbeat single, "Walk," followed. Kwabs also worked with Plan B and Dave Okumu on his debut album, which was expected to be released in 2015. ~ John D. Buchanan, Rovi
Walk

Gotta take a minute just to ease my mind
'Cause if I don't walk then I get caught up
And I'll be falling all the way down
Hundred headlights making me blind
All of your pleasures catching my eye
If I jump once, then I never think twice
And my senses only lie to me, lie to me
I don't know how I feel so wrapped in me, wrapped in me
I gotta check myself
Before I get what I want to, find out is not what I thought it was
And you know why I
Gotta slow up, gotta shake this high
Gotta take a minute just to ease my mind
'Cause if I don't walk then I get caught up
And I'll be falling all the way down
Turning my head and shutting my eyes
Doesn't even matter if I'm wrong or right
'Cause if I don't walk, I can't even sit around
And I'll be falling all the way down
Tell myself "Leave" while I'm still strong
Don't look back!" till I'm ten miles gone
And when the road stops, I'm gonna keep on
Until I end up in the place that I belong
But the pressure is pushing me back again
Telling me not to pretend
There isn't any use to even trying to get you out of my head
So, I lift my feet off the ground
And I'm gonna walk right up
Gotta slow up, gotta shake this high
Gotta take a minute just to ease my mind
'Cause if I don't walk then I get caught up
And I'll be falling all the way down
Turning my head and shutting my eyes
Doesn't even matter if I'm wrong or right
'Cause if I don't walk, I can't even sit around
And I'll be falling all the way down
Won't get caught in the old fly trap
Runaway, runaway, never come back
No way I'm going down like that
No, no, runaway, runaway
Won't get caught in the old fly trap
Runaway, runaway, never come back (I can't get caught up again!)
No way I'm going down like that (No way)
No, no, runaway, runaway (No, no)
Gotta slow up, gotta shake this high
Gotta take a minute just to ease my mind
'Cause if I don't walk then I get caught up
And I'll be falling all the way down
Turning my head and shutting my eyes
Doesn't even matter if I'm wrong or right
'Cause if I don't walk, I can't even sit around
And I'll be falling all the way down yeah
I'm gonna walk now
I'm gonna walk now
Yeah, no, no, no
Gonna walk
Yeah yeah oh, no, no, no, no yeah oh
In "Walk," Kwabs expresses the tension between the pull of temptation and the need to resist it in order to stay true to oneself. The lyrics suggest that the singer is struggling with a particular temptation, perhaps related to substance abuse or an unhealthy relationship. The repeated affirmation, "Gotta slow up, gotta shake this high / Gotta take a minute just to ease my mind" indicates that the singer is aware of the danger of giving in too quickly to temptation, and recognizes the importance of taking a step back and regaining perspective.
The metaphor of walking is central to the song. Walking represents the metaphorical journey towards self-discovery, the willingness to move forward in the face of adversity, and the desire for personal growth. The refrain, "If I don't walk then I get caught up / And I'll be falling all the way down" reinforces this idea, suggesting that a lack of intentionality and self-awareness can lead to negative consequences.
The song captures the complexity of holding conflicting desires and recognizing the need for self-discipline. The lyrics "But your temptations make me stay another night / And my senses only lie to me, lie to me / I don't know how I feel so wrapped in me, wrapped in me" describe the singer's struggle to resist temptation and maintain clarity of thought. The song acknowledges the difficulty of maintaining this clarity, as well as the importance of striving for it despite the challenges.
