Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Kylie Minogue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Overall Meaning

Kylie Minogue's version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' is a cover of the iconic song first introduced by a young Judy Garland in the 1939 movie 'The Wizard of Oz'. The lyrics are full of hope and speak to the idea of a better life that is out of reach. The first verse describes a mythical place over the rainbow where there is a beautiful land rumored to exist in a lullaby. The second verse speaks of the singer's longing to leave their troubles behind and find a place where they can be free. The reference to lemon drops melting and being high above the chimney tops is symbolic of a place of perfect peace where nothing can harm you.

The chorus of the song is about the desire to be able to live life without limitations. The bluebirds that fly over the rainbow are representing the possibility of happiness and fulfillment that may be out of reach for the singer. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, highlighting the unfulfilled desire to find a place where dreams really do come true.
