T'as qu'à lui mettre ton vieux foulard
D'automne
The lyrics of Léo Ferré's song Ma vieille branche describe a personification of a withered tree branch. The first verse paints a picture of the physical appearance of the branch with hair-like dead leaves and melancholic streams of water. The assistance of the North wind to the mother rain emphasizes the fragility of the branch. The repeated phrase "Ma vieille branche" (My old branch) serves as a reminder of the main subject of the song.
The next verse details the names of the branch, resembling cracked skins of blue and grey cloths. The "coutures" (stitches) of the North wind symbolize the scars that stay when the butterflies die. In the third verse, the branch is personified once again with its own troubles with a debtor nightingale and misty eyes. The old singer just swings with the wind, and it is as simple as putting a scarf to make it go away.
The fourth verse describes the past vividly with a metaphor of fields as straw hats during a beautiful and faraway summer. The old toys mentioned in the verse suggest that the environment of the branch has experienced decays and neglects, frightening away the birds. The final verse talks about the plight of the old branch with nothing but an insignificant face and a thin layer of flowers that will lead it to its final winter.
