Que j'avais de si près tenus
Et tant aimés
Ils ont été trop clairsemés
Je crois le vent les a ôtés
L'amour est morte
Ce sont amis que vent emporte
Et il ventait devant ma porte
Avec le temps qu'arbre défeuille
Quand il ne reste en branche feuille
Qui n'aille à terre
Avec pauvreté qui m'atterre
Qui de partout me fait la guerre
Oh vent d'hiver
Ne convient pas que vous raconte
Comment je me suis mis à honte
In Pauvre Rutebeuf, Léo Ferré mourns the loss of his friends who were once so dear to him. He wonders what has become of them and why they have drifted away. He says that they were scattered away by the wind, just like love's death, which is beyond repair. Ferré's use of the wind as a metaphor for separation and loss is ironic since it is also the same wind that carries the leaves off the trees in winter, symbolizing the transience of life. He laments the fact that he has nothing left but memories of his once closer friends. He then speaks of his own poverty, saying that he is constantly struggling for survival and that even the wind that blows against his door makes him feel exposed and vulnerable. He finishes the song by saying that with friends and love gone, all that is left is the harsh reality of life.
