Le piano du pauvre
Léo Ferré Lyrics

Se noue autour du cou
La chanson guimauve
Toscanini s'en fout
Mais il est pas chien
Et le lui rend bien
Il est éclectique
Sonate ou java
Il aime la musique
Le piano du pauvre
C'est le Chopin du printemps
Sous le soleil mauve
Des lilas de Nogent
Il roucoule un brin
A ceux qui se plaisent bien
Et fait des avances
Ravel ou machin
C'est déjà la fin
Mais voilà qu'y recommence
Le piano du pauvre
Se noue autour des reins
Sa chanson guimauve
Ça va toujours très loin
Car il n'est pas chien
Toujours il y revient
Il a la pratique
C'est pour ça d'ailleurs
Que les histoires de cœur
Finissent en musique
Le piano du pauvre
Est un joujou d'un sou
Quand l'amour se sauve
Y'a pas que lui qui s'en fout
Car on n'est pas chien
On le lui rend bien
On est éclectique
Jules ou bien machin
C'est déjà la fin
Mais voilà qu'on y repique
Le piano du pauvre
C'est pas qu'il est voyou
La chanson guimauve
On en prend tous un coup
Car on n'est pas chien
On a les moyens
Et le cœur qui plisse
Quand Paderewsky
Tire de son étui
L'instrument de service
Le piano du pauvre
N'a pas fini de jacter
Sous le regard fauve
Des rupins du quartier
Pendant que les barbus
Du vieil Institut
Posent leurs besicles
Pour entendre au loin
Le piano moulin
Qui leur fait l'article
Le piano du pauvre
Dans sa boîte à bobards
Se tape un air guimauve
En se prenant pour Mozart
S'il a l'air grognon
Et joue sans façons
Des javas perverses
C'est qu'il est pas chien
Et puis qu'il faut bien
Faire marcher le commerce.
Léo Ferré’s song, Le piano du pauvre, tells the story of a piano that is worn around the neck of a poor person who sings guimauve songs that even Toscanini ignores. However, the piano is open to different styles of music, whether it's a sonata or a java, a concerto or a polka. The piano loves music and it helps those who enjoy its sound to immerse themselves in the music. The piano is described as the Chopin of spring, and it sits under the mauve sun of Nogent's lilacs, singing to those who are happy with it. The piano flirts a little bit with those who love Ravel or someone else, but ultimately it's always back to music.
The piano of the poor is a cheap one, which costs only a penny. When love leaves, it's not only the piano that complains, but everyone who's around it. They return to the piano because it's an eclectic instrument that they all love. However, when Paderewski appeared with his instrument, the heart of the piano shrank, as did that of those who were around it. Nevertheless, the piano never stopped making music, even when it was watched by the rich people of the area who were staring at it with their sharp eyes. From its box of lies, the piano sings a little guimauve tune, believing that it is Mozart.
In summary, Le piano du pauvre is an ode to music, with the piano symbolizing the beauty of the mundane, everyday life. The lyrics also suggest that music connects people and creates bonds regardless of their social status or background. The song is a poignant reminder that music is an essential part of life, accessible to all, and that it can bring joy and hope to those who are struggling.
