After leaving Shreveport, she moved to New Orleans, where she studied music at the University of New Orleans and become a fixture in the city's Dixieland and bebop venues. Butler worked with such distinguished locals as Alvin Batiste, Ellis Marsalis, Henry Butler (no relation), and James Black before deciding to move to the New York area in 1984. Butler studied with Jon Hendricks after arriving in New York and later earned her living as an English teacher while tackling the Manhattan club world.
The early to mid-'90s found Butler signed to Chesky, for which she provided her bop-oriented debut album, No Looking Back (1992), and her lighter, more relaxed sophomore release, Day Dreamin' (1994). After leaving Chesky, Butler planned to record an album for Herbie Mann's Kokopelli label in 1997, but her plans fell through when the company experienced financial problems. 1999 saw the release of her third album, Blues in the City.

Please Send Me Someone To Love

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Understanding and peace of mind
And if it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love
Someone to love
Show all the world how to get along
Peace will enter when hate is gone
Please send me someone to love
I lay awake nights and ponder world troubles
And the answer is always the same
That unless men puts an end to all of this sin
Then the world's gonna end up in flames
Oh what a shame
Just because I'm in misery
I'm not begging for no sympathy
And if it's not asking too much
Lord, please send me someone to love
I lay awake nights and I ponder a world full of troubles
You know the answer is always the same
That unless man puts an end to all of his sins
You know the world's gonna end up in flames
Oh what a shame
Just because I'm in misery
I'm not asking for no sympathy
And if it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love (to love)
To love (to love)
To love (to love)
LaVerne Butler's song "Please Send Me Someone to Love" is a soulful ballad that speaks to the desire for peace and love in a world with so much hate and chaos. The opening lyrics are directed at heaven, asking for "understanding and peace of mind" for all mankind. The repetition of the phrase "and if it's not asking too much" illustrates the desperation for a solution to the world's problems, and the final request for someone to love is a plea for human connection and a hope for a better future.
The second verse addresses the idea that peace can only enter when hate is gone, and the importance of showing the world how to get along. The singer acknowledges their own struggles and the turmoil of the world, but resists the urge to beg for sympathy. Instead, the focus is on the need for a solution and a call to action. The final lines of the song repeat the chorus, emphasizing the desire for a connection with someone who can bring love into their life.
Overall, "Please Send Me Someone to Love" is a poignant and powerful statement on the need for love and connection in a world that often feels dark and divided. Through its lyrics, the song urges listeners to focus on the good in the world and to seek out ways to make a positive impact.
