Inside Out
La Pieta Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oh, come by friend
It starts and it ends
I feel
Laughter filters through cracks in pavements
Echoing vacancies
Headlights come quickly
Rushing towards me
I feel the pulsing inside out
Don't be so frustrated
I just called to say goodnight
I hope you are well
I just called to say goodnight
Shadows grow longer
Day into dark
I am counting the hours until I
I feel the pulsing inside out
Concrete grey landscape
Emptier still
I hear sound, I hear sound in the silence
I feel the pulsing inside out
Broken glass bottles
Stardust falling
Beauty that hurts
I feel the pulsing inside out
Don't be so frustrated
I just called to say goodnight
I hope you are well
I just called to say goodnight
You'll be sleeping soon
I look through my window
Are you dreaming well?
Maybe I'll cross through
Are you dreaming well?
Maybe I'll cross through
The lyrics to La Pieta's song "Inside Out" evoke a sense of melancholy and solitude as the singer reflects on their surroundings and yearns for connection. The opening lines, "Absence I know you, oh come by friend, it starts and it ends, I feel," suggest a familiarity with loneliness and isolation. The imagery of laughter filtering through cracks in pavements and echoing vacancies paints a picture of an empty and desolate environment. The singer longs for someone to take them home, to alleviate the pulsing feeling of being inside out.
The chorus of "Don't be so frustrated, I just called to say goodnight, I hope you are well, I just called to say goodnight," adds to the sense of longing and isolation. The singer reaches out to someone, perhaps a lover or friend, seeking connection and comfort. The repetition of the phrase "I just called to say goodnight" emphasizes the simplicity of the gesture, while also highlighting the distance between them.
The verses continue to describe the bleak landscape, with concrete grey surroundings and broken glass bottles. However, there is also a sense of beauty in the stardust falling, even though it hurts. The final lines of the song, "Maybe I'll cross through, are you dreaming well?" suggest a desire to bridge the distance between the singer and the person they are reaching out to.
Overall, "Inside Out" is a poignant reflection on loneliness, the desire for connection, and the beauty that can be found in difficult circumstances.

I saw this sculpture once at the Vatican almost 20 years ago, and its power still lives inside me today. It's the greatest piece of art I've ever seen.

What an impact this vision had on me, a 16 sophomore on a high school trip visiting Italy in 1974. I only wish I had been there in early 1972 when you could see it up close and maybe even touch it. I must have bought all they had of the actual little miniature statue to the color prints for sale. I had the prints framed and still hang in my study. What was I doing when I was 23, not this for sure.

This sculpture does not need explained or analyzed or have a talking head telling us about what michaelangelo was trying to achieve. You can only look at it in stunned silence and be in awe of it.
