Born into a musi… Read Full Bio ↴Lack of Afro is the recording name of Adam Gibbons.
Born into a musical family, Adam started playing the piano at the age of 7, taking lessons from his grandmother. He started the alto saxophone at the age of 11 and had progressed to Grade 8 by the time he was 17. Musical influences at this early stage included Motown, Soul, Jazz and all forms of Sixties music, courtesy of his father’s record collection. Meanwhile when he was 15 he had been shown simple beats on the drum kit by his uncle and he then took this further by playing along to records in his lunch-breaks at school. By the time he left school at 18 Adam had also learned to play the guitar.
In July 2005 Tru Thoughts producer and DJ Flevans picked up on a funk track that Adam had written in late 2003 called “Wait A Minute”. He played it at The Big Chill to great crowd reaction. Thanks in no small part to close friend Heavy Stylus, in January 2006 the manager of Freestyle records Jon Sheppard heard “Wait A Minute” on The Root Down website. Lack of Afro was signed to Freestyle records a couple of days later.
To date Adam has played alongside and/or supported such musical luminaries as Maceo Parker, Quantic, Breakestra, The Rebirth, Flevans, The Baker Brothers and Jon Kennedy. His first single on Freestyle “Wait A Minute” has sold over 1,000 copies (no mean feat for a debut) and was played on Annie Mac’s Mash Up on BBC Radio 1, as well as countless other radio stations up and down the country. He has since completed remixes for Eddie Roberts (One Note), Tim Wood (Socialbeats) and is at the moment working on one for The New Mastersounds (One Note) and Flevans (Tru Thoughts/Jack To Phono).
Born and raised in Exeter, Devon, Adam now lives in London and works for Sky Television.
Touch My Soul

Your touch pours like honey on my skin, smooth it lingers
You, the cure the cause
Of my blues
My only flaw
Your sea it can freezing, I thought I'd float
I sink deeper blue, by you I'm consumed
Oh I'm such a fool thinking I Won't get caught in your downhill flow
And yooou, the cure and the cause
Of my blues
My only flaw
You keep needing, keep calling
The cure and the cause
You keep needing, keep calling
The cure and the cause
You keep needing, keep calling
Even from a shut door
You step from view
Can still see you, your shadow tells me more
Don't take your love away, your love away...
And you, the cure and the cause
Of my blues
My only flaw
Don't take your love away, your love away...
Cure me, cure me
Cure me, please cure me
{Final - Not in Dennis' remix)
Just a few things before I head on my way
You are wonderful and good when you want to be
You are what I want but not what i need
And you are no good for me
But you are the cure, oh yeah, and you are the cause of my blues
Cure me, cure me...
The lyrics to Lack of Afro's "Touch My Soul" speak about the complexities of a romantic relationship that is both addicting and destructive. The singer is in love with someone who has the power to make them feel euphoric with just a touch, but at the same time, this person causes them great sadness and turmoil. The song begins by describing how easily the singer falls for their love interest and how their touch feels like sweet honey. The person is both the cure and the cause of their blues, highlighting the duality of their relationship. They are addicted to this person, entranced by their touch, but they sink deeper and deeper into despair whenever they are apart.
The chorus repeats the phrases "you keep needing, keep calling" and "the cure and the cause" over and over again, emphasizing the addictive and harmful nature of the relationship. The singer is fully aware of how toxic it is, but they still can't resist the pull of this person. They even plead with them not to take their love away, even though they know it might be better for them in the long run. The song ends with the singer acknowledging that this person is no good for them, despite being the cure to their blues. They are resigned to the fact that they need to be cured of their addiction to this person, even though it's painful.
Overall, "Touch My Soul" is a powerful song that captures the intense emotions of a complex relationship. It speaks to the universal experience of being addicted to something or someone that is ultimately harmful to us, and the difficulty of letting go of that addiction even when we know it's for the best.
