Promised Land
Lacrimosa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now it seems
To appear to us
Now we touch the ground
Arriving in this promised land
Where future meets the past

Red flags and tainted dreams
Little pale ladies in dolly white sheets
Pagan words and rose coloured drinks
Mechanical steam underneath

If to choose we rather take two
The chances are too less

If we turn to see
And once we pick a smile
Our lifetime has achived to touch a human heart

For once we turn to see
By chance we pick a smile

One word - One touch of hand
One single reason why

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, Lacrimosa explores the concept of a promised land, where the future and the past intersect. The opening lines suggest that this promised land has finally become visible and accessible to the singer and those around them. The act of touching the ground implies a sense of grounding and stability after a long journey.

The second paragraph introduces contrasting imagery of "red flags and tainted dreams" alongside "pale ladies in dolly white sheets." This can be interpreted as a juxtaposition between ideals and reality, between the hope and disillusionment that come with reaching one's desired destination. The mention of pagan words and rose-colored drinks adds a touch of mysticism and indulgence in this new land. The line about "mechanical steam underneath" suggests a sense of artificiality or hidden mechanisms at work, possibly referring to the challenges and complexities that may arise in this new land.

The third paragraph touches upon the notion of making choices and the inherent uncertainty that comes with it. The singer acknowledges that if they had to choose, they would rather take two options, possibly indicating that the available choices may not seem favorable or abundant. The phrase "the chances are too less" implies a sense of resignation or a feeling that the odds are against them.

The final paragraph delves into the transformative power of human connection. The act of turning to look and picking a smile signifies the significance of small gestures and interactions. It suggests that by simply seeing and acknowledging another person's smile, a lifetime's worth of accomplishment is achieved. The line "our lifetime has achieved to touch a human heart" evokes a sense of fulfillment and meaning that can be derived from simple acts of kindness and connection. The closing lines emphasize the impact of a single word, touch, or reason, hinting at the profound effect that even one small action can have on an individual's life.
