Ought to be alone, or so I say
I needed a change of scenery
She was really starting to annoy me
I went out shopping and planned to
Go to all them vintage stores
Then I got tired and ended up
And that's okay
Cause I found a really cool belt and
I feel like I'm in high school again
Never knew how much I missed until then
And I'm happy for this day
No matter what you say
I don't have to be sad like you
I have a commitment Friday night
First I say my prayer then I'm alright
I sit in my chair, you dim the light
When I look I stare with inner sight
I feel like I'm in high school again
Never knew how much I missed until then
And I'm happy for this day
No matter what you say
I don't have to be sad like you
Met up with some friends for Thai food
I liked it but wasn't in the mood
Can't you see that I'm just feeling blue?
What I do’s got nothing to do with you
I feel like I'm in high school again
Never knew how much I missed until then
And I'm happy for this day
No matter what you say
I don't have to be sad like you
The lyrics of Lana Del Rey's song "Blizzard" depict the singer's desire for solitude and escape from a frustrating situation. The singer finds herself caught up in a blizzard, which serves as a metaphor for feeling overwhelmed and wanting to be alone. She expresses her need for a change of scenery, as someone who was starting to annoy her surrounds her. To escape, she goes shopping with the intention of visiting vintage stores but ends up in a department store instead. Despite the unexpected turn of events, she remains content as she finds a cool belt.
The second verse highlights the singer's nostalgia for her high school days and the feeling of freedom and happiness associated with that time. She reflects on how she never realized how much she missed that period until now. Regardless of what others may say to try to bring her down, she asserts her ability to avoid sadness and maintain her happiness.
In the final verse, the singer mentions a commitment she has on Friday night, possibly implying a social engagement or a personal routine. She finds solace in her prayers and the moments of introspection that follow. This indicates that she values her alone time and inner peace. She alludes to having a deep connection with her thoughts and emotions, represented by the act of staring with "inner sight." Although she meets up with friends for Thai food, she confesses to feeling blue and emphasizes that her emotions have nothing to do with others, implying a sense of independence and self-reliance.
Overall, "Blizzard" delves into the themes of solitude, nostalgia, and self-validation. It portrays the singer's desire to escape from challenging circumstances, find solace within herself, and embrace personal happiness.
