The Man I Love
Lana Del Rey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Is Marilyn and Jesus.
Jumping off'a bridges,
Sparklers and streamers.
Honey, I wanna fly,
I wanna fly, I wanna fly.
Is Halloween and Jesus,
Coney Island beaches,
Chandeliers and seizures.
Honey, I wanna fly,
I wanna fly, I wanna fly.
I can't be with the man I love,
I can't be if he treats me rough.
I can't see him, I can't call him up.
All that's real to me,
Is trailer parks and beaches,
Alabama freezes,
Platinum impeaches.
Honey, I wanna fly,
I wanna fly, I wanna fly.
All that's real to me,
Is Halloween and Jesus,
Coney Island beaches,
Chandeliers and seizures.
Honey, I wanna fly,
I wanna fly, I wanna fly.
I can't be with the man I love,
I can't be if he treats me rough.
I can't see him, I can't call him up.
All that's real to me,
Is Marilyn and Jesus.
Jumping off'a bridges,
Sparklers and streamers.
I can't be with the man I love,
I can't be if he treats me rough.
I can't see him, I can't call him up.
The lyrics of Lana Del Rey's song "The Man I Love" depict a woman struggling to reconcile her desires with the reality of her situation. She finds solace in the ephemeral, fleeting experiences of life that bring her joy, such as jumping off bridges, sparklers and streamers, trailer parks and beaches, and Halloween and Jesus. She desires to escape the confines of her current situation and fly away, but there is a constant reminder that she cannot be with the man she loves if he treats her roughly. Despite this, she continues to dream and find beauty in the small moments of life that bring her happiness.
The song seems to suggest that the singer is trapped in a difficult situation, perhaps one of abuse or unrequited love. She finds temporary relief in these moments of joy but ultimately cannot escape the reality of her situation. The repeated line "I can't be with the man I love, I can't be if he treats me rough" emphasizes the struggle and pain she faces as she grapples with this dilemma.
Overall, "The Man I Love" is a poignant and introspective exploration of the complexities of love and life. It speaks to how we often find meaning and beauty in the small, seemingly insignificant moments of our lives, even in the face of hardship and adversity.
