You Go To My Head
Larry Clinton & His Orchestra Feat. Bea Wain Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought to my plea, cast a spell over me
Still I say to myself get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be?
You go to my head
With a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand July's
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance
You go to my head
You go to my head
The lyrics to Larry Clinton's song, You Go To My Head, describe the overwhelming impact that someone has on the singer, as they continuously occupy their thoughts and emotions. The first verse draws a comparison between thinking of the person and the bubbles in a glass of champagne, indicating a sense of euphoria or excitement that they bring. The second verse further emphasizes the addictive and intoxicating nature of the individual, using a comparison to a sparkling burgundy brew and adding that the very mention of them is like a kicker in a julep, an alcoholic beverage known for its potency.
The bridge of the song adds to the complexity of the emotions conveyed, as the singer acknowledges the unlikelihood of their feelings ever being reciprocated, yet still finds themselves unable to let go of them. They describe being cast under a spell by the possibility of having their love returned before admonishing themselves to “get a hold of yourself” and accept that it can never be.
The final verse returns to the idea that this person has an almost supernatural power over the singer, with their smile raising one’s temperature and their eyes captivating their soul. Though the singer is certain of their hopeless infatuation, they cannot help but admit that this person continues to hold a special place in their thoughts and feelings.
Overall, the lyrics to You Go To My Head present a bittersweet portrayal of unrequited love and the torment that it can bring to those affected by it. Despite the frustration and pain of their emotions, the singer cannot help but be drawn back to the one who haunts their thoughts and lingers in their dreams.

This generally is considered the outstanding version of the song, the secrets I think being the dance tempo Larry Clinton chose and Bea Wain's total understanding of the song. She was a markedly intelligent singer who understood the virtues of simplicity.
She also had a brilliant sense of rhythm.

The 'for radio only' recording on "Hindsight Records" is the very best version. There both the band and Ms. Wain put their very best emotion into the song, and it isn't rushed for the short time allowance of a 10" 78 rpm record. Always one of my favorite songs. Sends tingles through my body. Always better with a cigarette, but I don't smoke anymore.
