Mvula grew up in the Birmingham suburbs of Selly Park and Kings Heath with two younger siblings, and was influenced by the girl band Eternal. She sang with Black Voices, an a capella group set up by her aunt. She graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition. While she was working as a supply teacher in a Birmingham secondary school, she started writing songs on her laptop. She was working as a receptionist when she sent out two demos to several people in the music industry. She is married to singer Themba Mvula.
Signed to Sony subsidiary RCA, Mvula released her debut extended play, "She", on 16 November 2012. Her debut studio album, Sing to the Moon, was released on 4 March 2013. One person has described her music using a new term, "gospeldelia". The album was preceeded by the single "Green Garden". The song is an elegy to her home in Kings Heath. On 6 December 2012, Mvula was shortlisted for the Critics' Choice award at the 2013 BRIT Awards. On 9 December, she was nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2013 poll, and finished in fourth position. On 1 February 2013, she gave a live TV performance on The Graham Norton Show on BBC One, singing "Green Garden".
Like the Morning Dew

Like the morning dew, that goes away
Our love is like the morning clouds
Like the morning dew that goes away
Nothing lasts but memories
The best one seem to go by slow
Try to write the perfect song for you
It didn't belong to me
Our love is like the morning clouds
Like the morning dew, that goes away
Our love is like the morning clouds
Like the morning dew that goes away
Heaven knows how long to go
We never have a thing to show
Every day seems like the same
Then I realized I didn't belong to you
I didn't belong to you
Our love is like the morning clouds
Like the morning dew, that goes away
Our love is like the morning clouds
Like the morning dew that goes away
Like the morning dew
Love is like the morning clouds
Laura Mvula's song Touching The Morning Dew is a sentimental and reflective ode to a relationship that has come to a close. The lyrics express the transience of love and the fleetingness of memories, comparing them to the transitory beauty of the morning clouds and dew. Just as the morning dew evaporates with the rising sun, so too does their love fade away.
The opening lines "Our love is like the morning clouds/Like the morning dew, that goes away" establish the central metaphor of the song. The reference to the morning clouds and dew suggests that the love they once shared was beautiful, delicate, and momentary. The second verse acknowledges that memories, much like the best moments in life, seem to pass by slowly. The singer of the song, perhaps attempting to hold onto the relationship by writing the perfect song, eventually realizes that the love didn't belong to her. Despite this, the chorus repeats the metaphor of the morning clouds and dew, emphasizing the ephemerality of love.
The bridge of the song layers on another element of regret and loss, as we discover that the singer is lost and unsure of how long she must continue in this state. "Heaven knows how long to go/We never have a thing to show/Every day seems like the same/Then I realized I didn't belong to you" captures emotions of uncertainty and despair. By ending on the line "I didn't belong to you," there is an implication that both parties played a role in the end of the relationship, and now it is time for them to move on.
Overall, Touching The Morning Dew is a hauntingly beautiful ballad that speaks to the transience of love and the importance of cherishing memories. The metaphor of the morning clouds and dew conjures an image of fleeting beauty, one that is both ephemeral and memorable.
