Autumn Leaves
Lawrence Welk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Overall Meaning

The Lawrence Welk song, "Autumn Leaves," begins with the visual of falling leaves drifting by the window. This signifies the autumn season with the leaves, red and gold in color, slowly falling down to the ground. As the singer looks at these falling leaves, he sees the image of his loved one's lips and remembers the sweet summer kisses they shared together. The hands which held his also had a sun-tanned appearance from basking in the warm summer sunshine.

However, these beautiful memories turn into longing and sadness as the singer realizes that his lover is no longer with him. He is reminded that the days grow longer without her and that soon winter will be approaching. But the most painful part for him is when autumn leaves fall, reminding him of the love he has lost.

The French lyrics in the second verse speak of a romance that was cherished but had to come to an end. The singer clarifies how much they were in love and lived together side by side, but fate had other plans. Slowly, wordlessly, they were parted. The sea erases the footprints of lovers, who are no longer together.

There's no better musical version of autumn leaves than Roger Williams

Thank you!

Special guests were a rare and irregular occurrence on the Lawrence Welk Show. This was a very prestigious invitation and Roger was a most prestigious guest - and I imagine the host was speaking very honestly when he said, "...one of my personal favorites..." One of mine too!

Imagine a piano song without vocals hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song did.

Simply put .... the FINEST there ever was!
Lawrence Welk, his orchestra and ensemble, and Roger Williams were consummate professionals.

Roger Williams🎹❤️, Autumn Leaves will always remind me of the legendary pianist!

Roger Williams Music

The 1965 version added a chorus vocal. It is not available digitally yet on our channel, but it is on the arranger's channel: https://youtu.be/PvDaVBIq29A

@Merri M I don't think Roger did a published version with a vocal. However Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and many others did lovely vocals.
