Michelle From Somewhere
Lazarus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Michelle, was i wrong, to hold your hand?
It's a hard thing, to admit that i was wrong
So i'll try and forget,
I hope you can forget

So i will be alone tonight
Pushed out of sight and out of mind
So i can forget
And so you can forget

Michelle, your whole life is on tonight
'cause i speak with your breath from amongst your thighs
Try hard to forget
I hope you can forget

So wake up to your heart from your shady place
And choke on the poems that you gave to me
And then try and forget
Are such words to forget?

Michelle, you were wrong to hold my hand
And for your dreams here's a child's song

I hope i can forget,
You won't have to forget.

Overall Meaning

The song "Michelle From Somewhere" by Lazarus centers around the theme of regret and trying to forget. In the beginning of the song, the singer asks if he was wrong to hold Michelle's hand, indicating that there may have been a relationship between the two. He struggles to admit that he was wrong in some way and expresses a desire to forget. He hopes that Michelle will also be able to forget.

The song takes a darker turn in the second verse, where the singer speaks of Michelle's life being on tonight, possibly indicating a performance or show. He speaks of "speaking with her breath from amongst her thighs," a possibly suggestive or intimate line. The singer asks Michelle to wake up to her heart from her "shady place," and then tells her to "choke on the poems" that she gave him. The last line of the verse asks if such words are meant to be forgotten.

In the final verse, the tables turn and the singer tells Michelle that she was wrong to hold his hand. He gives her a child's song for her dreams and ends with the hope that he can forget, while Michelle won't have to.

Overall, the lyrics of the song convey a sense of confusion and regret over a relationship that went wrong. There are hints at intimacy and betrayal, but the specifics are left up to interpretation.

As the cheerless towns pass my window
I can see a washed out moon through the fog
And then a voice inside my head
Breaks the analogue And says

"Follow me down to the valley below
You know
Moonlight is bleeding
From out of your soul"

I survived against the will
Of my twisted folk
But in the deafness of my world
The silence broke And said

Follow me down to the valley below
You know
Moonlight is bleeding
From out of your soul

Follow me down to the valley below
You know
Moonlight is bleeding
From out of your soul

My David don't you worry

This cold world is not for you
So rest your head upon me
I have strength to carry you
Ghosts of the twenties rising Golden summers just holding you
Follow me down to the valley below
You know
Moonlight is bleeding
From out of your soul
Follow me down to the valley below
You know
Moonlight is bleeding
From out of your soul
Come to us Lazarus
It's time for you to go

Can we just appreciate or TALK A LITTLE MORE about Richard Barbieri and Colin Edwin for contributing their magic to PT's sounscape all along ? Songs like 'Sound of muzak' and 'Mellotron Scratch' wouldn't have been the same without them ! 🥳❤🎹🎵🎼 🎸

I'll just leave my comment

Really disappointed that they weren't involved in the last PT release. Shame that "band stuff" has to get in the way of the music.

oh and. "GRAVITY EYELIDS" - his bass playing on that, is so BEAUTIFULLY SPARSE... and Chris Maitland's drumming.. The way they have that subtle groove for the first half... is one of my other favourites. BRILLIANT, if you check out the one on Dutch TV, the VIDEO is AWFUL, but the SOUND is PERFECT!!!!

Hell yes. I had the accidental pleasure of meeting Colin Edwin outside a cafe when I had travelled interstate to a friends house. he said "oh hey you gotta get coffee from this place and meet this guy" - I had NO IDEA who porcupine tree were. But yeah. He looks stoned on stage? Well, um... yeah... haha we ordered coffee - and my friend introduced me to Colin, saying "this guy is the most chilled out, wicked bassist I've ever met".... haha and besides the coffee, use your imagination as to what was in his other hand.... HAHA.... true story i promise... and he was the nicest of people.
