Tangerine
Led Zeppelin (Definitive Collection Mini-LP Replica) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Measuring a summer's day, I only finds it slips away to grey
The hours, they bring me pain

Tangerine, Tangerine, living reflection from a dream
I was her love, she was my queen, and now a thousand years between

Thinking how it used to be
Does she still remember times like these?
To think of us again?
And I do

Tangerine, Tangerine, living reflection from a dream
I was her love, she was my queen, and now a thousand years between

Overall Meaning

Possible interpretation:

The song Tangerine is a nostalgic reflection on a lost love that the singer still cherishes after a long time. The opening lines suggest that he feels the passing of time acutely, as he realizes that a beautiful summer's day can quickly turn into a bleak one. The words "measuring" and "slips away to grey" suggest a sense of longing and regret, as if the singer is trying to hold onto something that is slipping away from his grasp. The hours become a source of pain for him, perhaps because they remind him of the distance and separation that now exist between him and his beloved.

The chorus brings the title of the song into play, as the singer addresses his lost love directly, calling her a "living reflection from a dream." This phrase implies that the woman still lives on in his memories and imagination, as if she were a mirage or a phantom that he can't entirely let go of. He describes himself as her love and her queen, suggesting that their relationship was mutual and tender, but also distant and idealized. The final line of the chorus underscores the temporal gap between them, as he imagines a thousand years of history separating them.

The second verse deepens the mood of wistfulness, as the singer wonders if his former partner still remembers the good times they had together. He longs to reconnect with her and revive their romance, but he also acknowledges that this might be a futile or impossible endeavor. The phrase "times like these" suggests that their relationship had a distinctive quality or flavor, possibly marked by joy, innocence, or emotional intensity. The repetition of the chorus reinforces the emotional power of the memories that the singer is evoking, as he tries to summon the ghost of his lost love.

Tangerine was such an underrated song on this album!!!!!

@jg300ascout1

Absolutely, this and "That's the Way". One can easily imagine them conspiring to sneak these acoustic/semi-acoustic numbers on to albums. Probably held them back until the producers begged them for 8-10 songs so they could release "Well, we DO have a couple of soft numbers that aren't quite ready...." "GIVE IT TO US, GIVE IT TO US!" Sadly, none of this stuff got any airplay because they weren't "hit single" material.
