Is It True
Lee & The Leopards Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to the talk that's going around town
Everywhere you go they're spreading it around
Saying that you've gone and found another one
Is it true, my love?
What about the ring you gave me yesterday?
Is it hard for me to throw it all away
As you said goodbye, if you have no lie
Is it true my love?

Don't you know, don't you know
You're making me blue
Baby, baby say it isn't, say it isn't true
Coming down the street the story looks the same
Everyone I meet is whispering your name
Saying that you've gone and found another one
Is it true, my love?
Saying that you've gone and found another one
Is it true, my love?

Don't you know, don't you know
You're making me blue
Baby, baby say it isn't, say it isn't true
Coming down the street the story looks the same
Everyone I meet is whispering your name

Saying that you've gone and found another one
Is it true, my love?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lee & The Leopards's song "Is It True" revolve around the theme of gossip and doubt in a romantic relationship. The singer is hearing rumors from various sources about their partner's infidelity, and they are seeking confirmation or denial of these rumors.

In the first verse, the singer acknowledges the widespread talk that is circulating in town. People are spreading rumors that their partner has found someone else. The singer questions the truthfulness of these rumors and directly addresses their partner, asking if it is true that they have indeed moved on. They mention the ring given to them as a symbol of commitment and loyalty, wondering if it holds any meaning now.

The second verse delves deeper into the emotional impact of the rumors. The singer expresses their sadness and despair, feeling "blue" due to the uncertainty surrounding their partner's faithfulness. They plead with their partner to tell them that the rumors are false, to alleviate their emotional distress. The mention of the "story looks the same" suggests that this is not the first time such rumors have circulated, further intensifying the doubt and anxiety within the singer.

The chorus reinforces the desperation for the truth. The repetition of the question "Is it true, my love?" emphasizes the singer's need for reassurance. They yearn for their partner to deny the rumors and restore their faith in the relationship. The repetition of "Don't you know, don't you know, you're making me blue" highlights the pain caused by the uncertainty and the power their partner holds to alleviate it.

The final verse reiterates the prevalence of the rumors and the effect they have on the singer's interactions with others. Hearing whispers of their partner's name wherever they go, the singer realizes that the gossip has permeated their entire community. They express their desperation one last time, questioning whether their partner has, in fact, found another person. The repetition of the chorus at the end amplifies the emotional turmoil and longing for clarity that the singer feels.

Overall, "Is It True" explores the doubts and insecurities that arise from rumors and the impact they can have on a relationship. It portrays the vulnerability and heartache of the singer as they seek confirmation or denial of the gossip that surrounds them.

A good early Motown single was "Come Into My Palace" by Lee & the Leopards. The Gordy Records single featured a hokey '50s bass intro and inspired wailing. Lee was Lee Henry Moore, and the Leopards, well, there was Prentiss Anderson and unknowns. Moore, Brian Holland, and William Stevenson composed the April 1962 release that the Supremes redid as a ballad

@srercrcr

I'll give 'em a handicap....it's just the second Gordy record!
