Trying to Make It
Lee & The Leopards Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Heard that boy singing
Yeah he sweet
Like a limping wrist
She heard I fucked her cousin
I deserved it
I took different risks
You want top 5 in the city
I’m a different list
Don’t call me less you got some bread
Or you kissing dick
Breaking hella laws
That’s how I came up
Decade in the game
Damn shame
I never change up
Cut middlemen across they throats
I cross them niggas out
She got a man
I ain’t worried him
I’m still up in her mouth
And I'm still up in her house
The way I live
Pays the bills
Bitch can’t put me out
Give a fuck bout an i love you
Til you the fix the count
I’mma slumdog
Game being sold
I can’t give it out
Problem solver
9 Milla meter gets shit figured out
Thai cuisine
That Red Curry got some spice to it huh
I like her and I like her
I see I got like two at once
Gotta be smart on the road
They’ll go thru that trunk
Gotta be sharp when you owe
Or you will get touched
If she got a good brain
Don’t bring her round
I’mma give her sons
Y’all speaking outta turn
Like Im posed to give a fuck
Some said i changed
I just got focused
Hocus
Pocus
Noticed my safe start filling up
You don’t feel safe where I stay
I’m no longer living there
Them emotions don’t translate well
Or you fake as hell
No hustle bout yoself
Lost yo mind
You a Waste of air
Space as well.
I can make it clear
They just hate when I take it there
I spent 5 digits on different flavors bales
They said next time make it six
I’m trynna make it 12
Fuck 12
Cap how much we trynna make this year
Air B n B vacuum sealing my favorite yea
Heard that boy singing
Yeah he sweet
Like a limping wrist
She heard I fucked her cousin
I deserved it
I took different risks
You want top 5 in the city
I’m a different list
Don’t call me less you got some bread
Or you kissing dick
Breaking hella laws
That’s how I came up
Decade in the game
Damn shame
I never change up
Cut middlemen across they throats
I cross them niggas out
She got a man
I ain’t worried him
I’m still up in her mouth
And I'm still up in her house
The way I live
Pays the bills
Bitch can’t put me out

Give a fuck bout an i love you
Til you the fix the count

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Lee & The Leopards song "Trying To Make It" are raw, explicit, and unapologetic. The song focuses on the rapper's hustle and rise to success, while also addressing his disregard for societal norms and rules. The opening lines "Heard that boy singing, yeah he sweet like a limping wrist" can be interpreted as a sarcastic remark towards other rappers who prioritize commercial success over the quality of their music. The line "she heard I fucked her cousin, I deserved it, I took different risks" shows that the rapper is unapologetic about his actions and willing to take risks to get ahead.

The lyrics also address the rapper's climb up the success ladder, with lines like "you want top 5 in the city, I’m a different list" and "decade in the game, damn shame, I never change up." The rapper appears to be proud of his unconventional approach to the industry and his refusal to conform. The line "give a fuck 'bout an I love you, 'til you fix the count" portrays the rapper's focus on his financial success over romantic relationships.

Overall, the song showcases the rapper's disdain for societal expectations and his desire to succeed at any cost. The lyrics might be controversial, but they highlight the ruthless nature of the entertainment industry and the lengths that some individuals go to achieve their goals.

The second 45 release on Gordy, and a B-side at that (b/w "Come Into My Palace"). Great artist biography by Andrew Hamilton from AllMusic: A good early Motown single was "Come Into My Palace" by Lee & the Leopards. The Gordy Records single featured a hokey '50s bass intro and inspired wailing. Lee was Lee Henry Moore, and the Leopards, well, there was Prentiss Anderson and unknowns. Moore, Brian Holland, and William Stevenson composed the April 1962 release that the Supremes redid as a ballad; the Leopards' was an up-tempo novelty. Motown canned the Supremes' version for more than 25 years; Brenda, with sister, Patrice Holloway, waxed a duet version. Ironically, both sides of Lee and the Leopards' Gordy single, the flip was "Trying to Make It," was leased to Laurie Records in 1963, quite odd for Motown to do this, it usually happened the other way around. They cut a Lee Moore tune on Fortune Records in 1964 entitled "Don't Press Your Luck," undersided by "What About Me." Fortune couldn't put the mighty Nolan Strong & the Diablos over the top, so you know Lee & the Leopards didn't have anything coming from the financially strapped label. KZ Records issued a tune or two and they possibly drop one-off singles on other small labels.
