Lee Dewyze attended an alternative high school but states that music and his teachers were his inspiration to go back to his studies. Before Idol, DeWyze worked as a paint salesclerk. His musical influences include Cat Stevens, Eric Clapton, Ben Harper, and Simon & Garfunkel.
DeWyze's career began when he was 16 or 17, after he met Louis Svitek, owner of WuLi Records, and Ryan McGuire of the Virginia Gentlemen. Lee DeWyze auditioned in Chicago for the ninth season of American Idol with the song "Ain't No Sunshine", which was also covered by Kris Allen. During Hollywood week, his group included Aaron Kelly and Crystal Bowersox, who all made it into the Top 24. During the first week, he performed "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol, which was praised by Simon Cowell. The next week he sang "Lips of an Angel", which did not get the same response as his first performance but was good enough to get him into the top 16. His third song, "Fireflies", came as a surprise and was generally liked by the viewers, critics, and the judges.
After making it to the Top 12, DeWyze performed Beast of Burden during The Rolling Stones week. For the Top 11's theme, Billboard #1 Hits, DeWyze performed The Letter by the The Box Tops. The following week DeWyze performed Treat Her Like a Lady impressing mentor Usher and all four judges including Cowell who said that "This is the night that your life may have changed forever." For the Top 9 week Lee performed Hey Jude by The Beatles. His closest friend is his fellow roomate, Andrew Garcia.
Falling Slowly
Lee DeWyze Lyrics

All the more for that
Words fall through me and always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You made it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
But you have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly, sing your melody
I'll sing along
Oh, I'll sing along
Take this sinking boat and point it home
(I don't know you, but I want you)
We've still got time
The lyrics to Lee DeWyze's song, "Falling Slowly," are powerfully introspective and emotional. The song starts with the singer confessing his unfamiliarity with the person he's addressing, but his desire for their company regardless. The lyrics convey the sense that the singer is a bit lost and that life isn't quite going how he'd like it to. He's struggling to connect with people around him, feeling that words often "fall through" him, and he can't react. He then brushes off the idea of playing games that amount to nothing, which could point to wasted time and relationships in his life.
The chorus is particularly poignant, where the singer repeats the phrase, "take this sinking boat and point it home," seemingly asking for help or guidance. He then adds, "we've still got time," a nod to the fact that all is not lost, and there's still a chance to right the wrongs in his life. The second verse shines a light on his inner turmoil, where "moods that take me and erase me" suggest that he's going through some tough times that he can't shake off. However, the lyrics take a turn with the line "But you have suffered enough and warred with yourself." It's not clear who the singer is addressing here, but it could be interpreted as a message of hope to anyone who's going through a tough time.
Overall, the message of the song is one of hope and perseverance. While the singer might feel lost at times, there's still time to turn things around, and he encourages himself and anyone listening to do just that. The melody and Lee DeWyze's voice blend together perfectly to create a soulful and heartfelt song that leaves a lasting impression.
