Archaeopteryx
Lemon Demon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Saw him in a book of fossils
Dancing with some old Apostles.
I think if I went back in time,
He'd be there, alive.
Root of all my jealousy.

Grounded in my devastation,
I can't get no aviation.
Up in the sky, his grandchildren fly.
I don't sing, I sigh.

Tell the Archaeopteryx
That I never wanted this
Featherhead metropolis.
Liar liar, wings on fire.

When it's fast approaching winter
And I eat my turkey dinner,
Tickles of hate, they rattle my cage
And evolve to rage.
This is when I make a choice.

I will build a time contraption.
I will start a chain reaction.
Know what I think I'm going to do?
I am going to…

Tell the Archaeopteryx
That I never wanted this
Featherhead metropolis.
Liar liar, wings on fire.

Now the clock ticks,
And I hope this will fix
All the present bird tricks.
Farewell, Mr. Archaeopteryx.

Tell the Archaeopteryx
That I never wanted this

Featherhead metropolis.
Liar liar, wings on fire.

Overall Meaning

The song "Archaeopteryx" by Lemon Demon is a commentary on the singer's jealousy of the ancient bird's ability to fly and how humanity's progress has led to a world that has lost the purity of nature. The singer imagines the Archaeopteryx, a prehistoric bird, dancing with old Apostles in a book of fossils and regrets that he cannot go back in time to see it alive because it is the root of his jealousy. The singer is grounded in his devastation because he himself cannot fly and is unable to escape the problems that plague him. The grandchildren of the Archaeopteryx are able to fly freely, but the singer is limited in his ability to do so, leading to a sense of frustration and longing.

The lyrics take a turn as the singer decides to build a time contraption and start a chain reaction in order to go back in time and change the course of history. The singer makes the choice to do something about his anger and jealousy and hopes that by going back in time, he can fix the present world that he lives in. The singer bids farewell to the Archaeopteryx and hopes that his actions can lead to a world where there is less destruction of nature and more preservation of its beauty.

i'm surprised there's only 2 songs in this album about both prehistoric creatures and time travel (counting dinosaurchestra as one song)

What about the ultimate showdown?

Blake the Snake

@Scatman but with an C No. not in any way is there time travel

Scatman but with an C

@Blake the Snake yea but, the ultimate showdown does haves some kind of, weird things happening, considering i do think godzilla is in some way a dinosaur

Arthur Gildo

@Scatman but with an C It really depends on what incarnation of Godzilla it is. 54, Showa, Millenium, Legendary, Shin, 98, Anime, SP and Hanna-Barbera were creatures from the Permian period. Heisei was a Godzillasaurus (Not to be confused with the real life Gojirasaurus) that was mutated to be massive and spew radioactive fire.

Scatman but with an C

@Arthur Gildo well, yea

One of Neil's best pieces of writing, in my opinion.

Gremlin Music

I definitely agree. This album in general is probably his best lyrically, even though Spirit Phone is better overall.

its funny to see how emotionally moved people are by a song about going back in time and gunning down an archaeopteryx

WhatDoYouCallAnAlligatorInAVest? investigator

the lyricks could be about pickle rick, his voice and the music is just so convincing in how strongly jealous and forlorn he is
